 A Christmas present for Tanzania

What do you get this Christmas for the person who doesn't have everything?  How about two brand new doctors?  That's the gift you have made possible through Godparents for Tanzania.
On November 8, Daniel Rausen Masaawe and Calvin Mbora Mwasha were awarded their Doctor of Medicine degrees at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College in Moshi, Tanzania.
These two young men became our very first G4TZ students over ten years ago when they were still in high school.  They have worked very hard and have now been awarded their MD degrees after five years of study at KCMC..  Tanzania has two new doctors just in time for Christmas!
Both Dr. Rausen and Dr. Mbora are currently serving one-year internships at hospitals in Songea and Mbeya, Tanzania, respectively.
They extend their deepest thanks to the many sponsors who enabled them to achieve their dream of becoming doctors for the people of Tanzania.

We welcome our newest staff member,
Pastor Yotham Baha, our Tanzania Program Coordinator

Pastor Yotham Baha begins his work for G4TZ on January 1, 2009, as our full-time in-Bahacountry Program Coordinator.  Yotham retires from his position as Director of Christian Education for the Northern Diocese of the Evangelcial Lutheran Church in Tanzania at the end of this year.  His G4TZ office will be in Karatu.
Among his responsibilities will be the screening of scholarship applicants, supervision of education projects and the distribution of scholarship funds.  He will also help to coordinate and host Discovery Safari trips.
Yotham has helped to guide the development of Godparents for Tanzania since its beginning and is among our most trusted friends in Tanzania.  We are grateful to God that, through a gift from one of our most generous supporters, it will now be possible for him to become a full-time member of our staff.
      Karibu sana, Pastor Yotham Baha!

                             KARIBU SANA, TANZANIA!

From the President:
Redefining the meaning of "financial crisis"
You can't read a newspaper or turn on the TV without hearing ad nauseum that we are in the midst of a global financial crisis.  That's not news to many of our friends in Tanzania who struggle every day of their lives with a financial crisis.  They are not worried about losing their 401k's and what that might mean for the future; they are worried about putting food on the table and sending their kids to school today.  Any "financial crisis" we face pales by comparison.
Food costs in Tanzania have doubled and tripled for staple foods like maize and beans.  Fuel costs are now over $10.00/gallon contributing to the increases in food costs and other basic necessities. Our friends there will cut back to one meal a day, but what they fear most is that they won't be able to afford to send their kids to school.
Because you care, for which we thank God, the parents of our G4TZ students don't have to worry about that.  They may have to cut back on what is put on the table, but they know their kids will go to school.  That's what matters most to them because they believe, as do we at Godparents for Tanzania, that education is the one hope our TZ kids have for lifting themselves from poverty.
So, as we approach Christmas, I appeal to you to continue your support of your student into the new year and, if possible, click here to make a special year-end gift to Godparents for Tanzania so we can reach out to even more of the young people on our waiting list.
As Thanksgiving is upon us, we give thanks to you for your caring and your sharing.

                                       Happy Thanksgiving!
