HABARI!
News from
 Godparents for Tanzania

We're back from two great Discovery Safaris and getting ready for 2009!
Discovery Safaris, the travel program of Godparents for Tanzania, hosted 31 travelers in two groups during June and July to the Kilimanjaro and Karatu regions of northern Tanzania.
These two-week trips led us to churches, schools, hospitals, projects, villages and the homes of our friends there.  Groups also visited Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara or Tarangire National Parks to see a vast array of the wildlife for which Tanzania is so well-known.
Plans for the 2009 trip are already underway with trip dates in late June or July to be announced soon.  Details and registration available on our web site (link at right).

What travelers had to say about their '08 Discovery Safari...

  • Discovery Safaris gives you a look at the "real Africa," people struggling for a better life and they throw in a great safari!  LW
  • I greatly enjoyed my trip to Tanzania with Discovery Safaris.  It was an unforgettable experience of seeing new places, meeting new friends and coming face-to-face with a different culture. RS
  • Discovery Safaris gives you an intimate glimpse into the lives and faith of the African people.  The trip was well planned with a variety of activities and visits to families, churches and schools. BL
  • This was a marvelous experience to open the eyes of Americans to the truth that much of the world does not have the material wealth that we do, and yet can have a strong faith and happy life.  It causes us to look at our own priorities. IS
  • This was a life-changing experience because you meet so many wonderful people and know exactly how you can continue to help them and become part of their families.  TL
  • As an 82-year-old who had a great time traveling with Discovery Safaris, I say you need to have a better excuse than you age if you miss an opportunity to experience the vastness, beauty and serenity of Tanzania! HC

We welcome a new member of the G4TZ Board of Directors
and say thanks to three retiring members of the Board

Eunice Maringo is well-qualified as our newest Board member.  She has worked extensively on behalf of young people in Tanzania for many years, lectured in the U.S. and now brings her expertise to our Board of Directors. Karibu sana (warm welcome) to Mama Eunice!

We express our sincere appreciation to three retiring Board members, Dr. James Krell, Mr. Tom Clemens and Pastor Chip Gunsten.  All of these members of our Board have made significant contributions to the development of Godparents for Tanzania.  We are most grateful to them for their service to the young people of Tanzania and to our Board.  We say to them, "Mungu awabariki sana!"  (God bless you all!)

From the President-We have top notch students!
Of our 135 students currently being supported, we were able to interview 106 during a break between the two Discovery Safari groups. I was joined in these interviews by our Tanzanian Board members, Mama Eunice Maringo and Pastor Yotham Baha. We met with students from Kindergarten to University and were deeply impressed by their universal commitment to working very hard to take advantage of the educational opportunity afforded them by Godparents for Tanzania.
Equally impressive were their class-standings: over 90% of our students are in the top 10% of their class!  Several are ranked first or second out of 50 to 200 classmates!  Our young people are working very hard to be the best students they can be.
We will soon be sending student reports, pictures and letters the student have written to their sponsors.  As a group, they send to their sponsors their sincere gratitude for the opportunity which has been afforded them to obtain an education.
It was a privilege to be with these highly motivated and hard-working young people. If you may be interested in supporting a student in Tanzania, we have many on our waiting list; please visit our G4TZ web site for more information.
