| October is National Orthodontic Health Month
It's that time of year again! The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling off, and of course - kids everywhere are preparing for the most candy-friendly holiday of them all: Halloween! Unfortunately, Halloween treats can wreak havoc on your patient's braces. That's why the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) is once again promoting National Orthodontic Health Month and spreading the word about braces-friendly recipes!
Get creative this year and show your patient's a little Halloween love by distributing tasty treat recipes that the whole family can enjoy! Do you have a chef in your office? Cook up a batch or two to share with patients the week of Halloween. It's a great way to show patient appreciation while encouraging responsibility during treatment!

TC Tip - Words to Avoid Using With Your Patients
Featured Tip from Academy of Treatment Coordinators Author Sandra Issiac!
1. "Quote" - premier orthodontic practices don't give quotes. "Quote" implies that the patient needs to shop around for the lowest price or that the cost of treatment is negotiable. Orthodontics is not like getting new gutters or a new fence. Try using the word "fee."
2. "Discount" - premier orthodontic practices should not offer discounts. We are not selling auto insurance: there isn't a safe driver discount, there isn't a discount for buying online. Instead
of "discount," try offering a "courtesy." For example, "There is a 5% courtesy for paying for treatment in full." Or "Because your daughter is already a patient here we are offering you a $500 courtesy for your son."
3. "Emergency" - there are rarely true emergencies in orthodontics. Emergencies are those issues that require the use of 911. If a TC uses the word "emergency" during the initial exam, then he/she is setting the practice up to receive phone calls after hours. Instead of "emergency," try using the word "repair." Sometimes things happen with orthodontic appliances that need to be repaired and most of the time these things are not urgent nor are they true emergencies.
