AOA Clinical Tip - Wire Bending
Omega Loop Video
Even in the age of "straight wire orthodontics", bending of wires is still a skill which comes in handy on a daily basis for both the doctor and the assistant. In addition to simple step bends of archwires, the skills of wire bending also apply to fabrication and adjustment of retainers plus fitting and adjustment of headgears.

One basic concept of wire bending that many people forget is that when you bend a wire, use the plier as a vice and hold that hand stationary. Then do the bending with your fingers or thumb of the other hand. In otherwords, do the bending with your fingers, not with the plier. Another important concept is that whenever possible avoid sharp bends as this creates an area of weakness in the wire which eventually can break when under stress. To avoid sharp bends when using a bird beak plier, bend around the round beak whenever possible.

Alarna Pungar - Profile of an AOA Graduate

Graduate Strives to Improve Career Paths

Alarna Pungar
Alarna Pungar, of Torque Orthodontics is a great example of the value that clinical assistants bring to the profession.  Alarna competed in the presentation contest in Syndey at the WFO and finished second with her topic on Diagnostic Records.
As an experienced clinician, more than 10 years, Alarna strives to improve the education and training avenues for assistants world-wide.

A life student of the profession, Alarna believes that practical experience is just as important as didactic components for assistants and technicians. Her contributions will no doubt continue to impact the role of the assistant and bring further advances in teaching, training and education of the important role of assistants.
