AOA Clinical Tip - Wire Bending
Even in the age of "straight wire orthodontics", bending of wires is still a skill which comes in handy on a daily basis for both the doctor and the assistant. In addition to simple step bends of archwires, the skills of wire bending also apply to fabrication and adjustment of retainers plus fitting and adjustment of headgears.
One basic concept of wire bending that many people forget is that when you bend a wire, use the plier as a vice and hold that hand stationary. Then do the bending with your fingers or thumb of the other hand. In otherwords, do the bending with your fingers, not with the plier. Another important concept is that whenever possible avoid sharp bends as this creates an area of weakness in the wire which eventually can break when under stress. To avoid sharp bends when using a bird beak plier, bend around the round beak whenever possible. |
