This Week @ MissionWay: Family Rhythms
The importance of rhythm in music is undeniable. Without it, there is no music. God has also given us rhythms to life and parenting which are intended for our benefit. Honoring those rhythms creates a kind of melody and harmony in our families; ignoring them leads to busyness and isolation from one another. Running from one activity to another, our tendency is to rate our parenting by how much we pack into our schedules. The goal may be a rich family experience but the unfortunate result is often a relationally poor family. This Sunday we continue in the series Rocks in My Dryer by looking at how we can create rhythms in our parenting that will move us from isolation to deep, meaningful relationships with our children. Bring a friend and join us as we unpack Family Rhythms together!
For parents, the days are long, but the years are short.

Today marks the 7th anniversary of 9/11, a date that is imprinted in our memories and hearts forever. Today we remember to pray for our country and for the families of those who died in the attacks. Today we remember that 3,000 people died in the attacks that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, left the Pentagon in Washington badly damaged and saw a final hijacked airline crash in a Pennsylvania field. Please take a moment to pause and pray as we remember. |
Young Adult / College Community Group We are excited to announce that our small group that has been meeting on Tuesday nights to talk about missions has evolved into MissionWay's official Young Adult/College Community Group. We are planning to continue meeting in the months ahead. Soon we will announce our new Bible study and dates for our meeting. If you are a young adult or college student and want to get involved, contact Matt at mattwilbanks@missionwaychurch.org. Friends are always welcome! We hope you will join us in praying for this group as we continue together. |
Community Group Leaders Meet Next Week If you are a Community Group Leader, please make a note that all leaders will meet on Tuesday, September 16, 7 p.m. at the MissionWay Office. The goals for the meeting will be making sure all the groups are on the same page, developing a clear structure of Community Life at MissionWay and developing a communication system between Group Leaders, Staff, and other Teams. Contact Matt Wilbanks at mattwilbanks@missionwaychurch.org for more information. |
Ethiopian New Year
Today also marks the Ethiopian New Year. It's a very important holiday in Ethiopian culture. Ethiopians are excitedly visiting in the homes of friends and family and eating very special holiday meals.
There are many reasons that make the New Year celebration so prominent among other traditional holidays. After three months of heavy rains, the sun comes out marking the beginning of the "summer" season. Additionally, September (called "Meskerem") is seen as a month of transition from the old year to the new. Similar to our new year custom, it is a designated time to express hopes and dreams for the future.
The Addis Ababa Team is using this time of celebration to give out greeting cards, which are a very popular gift in Ethiopian tradition. The cards contain a Bible story and scripture reference along with traditional New Year images.
Pray for the team as they distribute hundreds of these cards throughout the city. Pray for our believing partners who are also helping to get these cards in the hands of as many Ethiopians as possible. Pray for those receiving the cards to be open to the message of Christ's love. Melkam Addis Amit (Happy New Year)! | |

Make Me a Servant
Sometimes we need to leave our comfort zones in order to be God's servant. Diane Quick is an example of someone who did just that. Diane faced a critical turning point in her life when she was caring for her ailing mother while raising her two young children. As difficult as this period was, Diane says, "It made me feel that if I could do that, I could do just about anything."
Following her mother's passing, this self-proclaimed introvert decided to go out of her comfort zone and begin attending church. She prayed about what God wanted for her life. "After being a stay-at-home mom, a room mom and a PTA mom, I decided to get involved in non-profit work." She had always been active in the Mandarin community, organizing neighborhood beautification projects and street clean-ups. In the early 1990s, God presented Diane with the chance to turn her experience into a position with the City of Jacksonville's "Keep Jacksonville Beautiful" program.
In 1997, God opened another door for Diane at Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville (HabiJax). Over the next five years, she coordinated over 30,000 volunteers to help build more than 700 homes. She and her staff were running at an incredible pace! Just then, God opened another door. In 2002, Diane became the first staff member with the St. Johns County Habitat affiliate in St. Augustine.
Diane believes that God has called us all to serve our community, to help people in need. "I help bring people together-CEOs and previously homeless people-to work side by side to do God's work. I feel richly blessed to be doing God's work each and every day at Habitat." Diane keeps this scripture in her office to remind her of her purpose:
This is how we know what love is: Christ gave his life for us. We too, then, ought to give our lives for our brothers and sisters! 17 Rich people who see a brother or sister in need, yet close their hearts against them, cannot claim that they love God. 18 My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.
