Penland School of Crafts 27th Annual Benefit Auction
August 10-11, 2012
Ahoy there! Here's an unexpected special edition in our ongoing series of Penland Benefit Auction newsletters, featuring artists whose work will be a part of this year's auction. We have invited trustees, staff members, collectors, artists, and friends to write about pieces that will be included in the summer 2012 benefit event and to comment on living with the works they have purchased in past auctions. We thought we'd sent our last auction newsletter for the year, but then we received a surprise donation that we're too excited about not to share!
A few words about the Sophie Glenn, a stunning last-minute addition to this year's auction...

Penland's 5th Session Wood Class, Sophie Glenn, Atlantic white cedar, cyprus, sapele, ash, 14 feet long
|
The Sophie Glenn is a 14-foot lapstrake rowing skiff designed by the renowned boat builder and designer Ed Monk and built by the 5th session wood class under the direction of instructor Tim Lee. She comes with two pairs of oars.
She is constructed from Atlantic white cedar, with cyprus frames, and sapele transom stem guards and rails. The oars are made of ash. The class named the boat Sophie Glenn, after the one female student among them. Instructor Tim Lee is from the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.
The boat will be sold in Saturday's silent auction, from 1 - 3:30 pm in the Gorelick Social Hall of Northlight building. If you're not going to be there, but would like nonetheless to throw the bones for a chance to sail away with this trim and lively piece of traditional, hand-built functional art, you can click here for more information about absentee bidding.
Anchors away! May the wind be at your back....
