Penland School of Crafts 27th Annual Benefit Auction
August 10-11, 2012

Here's the next in an ongoing series of Penland Benefit Auction newsletters, featuring artists whose work will be a part of this year's auction. We have invited trustees, staff members, collectors, and friends to write about pieces that will be included in the summer 2012 benefit event and to comment on living with the works they have purchased in past auctions.

A few words from glass enthusiast and collector Glen Hardymon about auction artist Shane Fero...

Shane Fero portrait

"Shane Fero's exquisite works of art are the products of an ever-inquisitive mind and imagination influenced by nature, anthropology, astrology, and Surrealism. Shane has been a flameworker for over 40 years and has his home and studio at Penland. Shane's work is sought out and treasured by collectors, and his unique objects can be found in numerous private and museum collections worldwide.  His long and illustrious career has included more than 20 solo exhibitions and participating in over 400 group exhibitions. He has been honored with three retrospectives and his work can be found in many museums worldwide, including the Museum of Art & Design in NYC, the GlasMuseum in Denmark, the Museum fur Glaskunst in Germany, and the Niijima Contemporary Glass Museum in Japan. Shane is also an educator and has taught not only at Penland but at numerous institutions including the Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School, and schools in Germany, the UK, Italy, Australia and Japan. He is a past president of the Board of Directors of the Glass Art Society.

Shane Fero's work in the 2012 Benefit Auction:
Subtle Refuge
, flameworked glass, sandblasted and acid-etched (bottle gaffed by John Geci),
20 x 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 in.

When you first see one of Shane's artworks, the word "magical" comes to mind. How else could someone create such exquisite figures in such vivid colors? His scent bottles and goblets are adorned with mythical figures that stir the imagination and often reflect Shane's own dreams. The many-layered forms of Shane's wall pieces feature not only his unique flameworking but also his painting skills. And each wall piece tells a story. Not only do these works reflect Shane's imagination, they are fun.

His glass birds are artistic masterpieces, each lighter than a feather, with exquisite colors, and reflect Shane's encyclopedic knowledge of birds and wildlife, particularly those native to the area around his Penland home.  Watching Shane create one of his birds is truly a unique experience. Subtle Refuge is classic Shane Fero - an exquisite bird perched on flameworked branches arising out of a perfectly formed vessel.

Whether a spirit vessel, a lovely bird, or a story-telling wall piece, all of Shane's work exhibits an extraordinary skill level that places Shane squarely within the top echelon of flameworked glass artists in the world.  Glass enthusiasts, take note: Subtle Refuge would be a perfect addition to your collection."
