Penland School of Crafts 27th Annual Benefit Auction
August 10-11, 2012

Here's the next in an ongoing series of Penland Benefit Auction newsletters, featuring artists whose work will be a part of this year's auction. We have invited trustees, staff members, collectors and friends to write about pieces that will be included in the summer 2012 benefit event and to comment on living with the works they have purchased in past auctions.

A few words about auction artist Daniel Clayman...

Glass art enthusiast and collector, and chair of Penland's Board of Trustees Glen Hardymon volunteered to share his thoughts about Tonal Shift, the cast glass sculpture (23-1/2 x 23-1/2 x 23 in.) Daniel has created for this year's benefit auction:

Dan Clayman's Tonal Shift

"Daniel Clayman is a nationally and internationally acclaimed contemporary studio glass artist known for the subtle beauty of his cast objects. Daniel began his journey, not actually in glass but in "light," as a lighting design student working with numerous touring theater and dance companies. He transitioned from pure light to glass in 1983 when he enrolled in the glass program at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with a BFA in 1986. Daniel has had solo exhibitions at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Art in San Francisco, the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, The Corning Museum of Glass, the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston and the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, as well as in many private collections.

Much of Daniel's work in recent years has been very large scale objects cast in glass, forms that seem as though they might be more likely to be found in another medium - bronze, for example - and take on a unique new aura when created in glass. Tonal Shift is a more friendly size for the collector but does not compromise the beauty and effects of light found in Daniel's large scale pieces. Tonal Shift truly captures the essence of Daniel's work: it is at once simple in its geometric form, complex in its fine details, rich in its interaction with light. The color is subtle and ever-changing in effect, and draws the viewer deeper into the work. In describing Daniel's body of work, words that come naturally to mind include "peaceful", "subtle," "pure," "elegant," "luminous," "breathtaking," and of course "beautiful." Tonal Shift is indeed at once breathtaking and peaceful.

To fully appreciate the subtle beauty of Daniel's work, you must see the work in person and spend time with it. Only then can you see and appreciate the detail in the workmanship and the complex effects of the play of light and shade across and through the glass. When you attend the Penland auction this summer, be sure to spend some time looking at this truly extraordinary work and imagining it in your own home." - Glen Hardymon
