August 10-11, 2012

A few words about auction artist Jenny Mendes...

Ceramic artist Jenny Mendes makes handbuilt figurative sculpture, tiles, and functional ware. What unites the work is her rich color palette and idiosyncratic--and immediately recognizable--drawing style. Jenny is a former Penland resident artist who lives and works in Ohio. She has received three Ohio Arts Council fellowships and her work has been exhibited at AKAR Gallery in Iowa, The Signature Gallery in Atlanta, The Works Gallery in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Institution Craft Show in Washington, DC, and SOFA Chicago, among others.

We don't know what Jenny will be donating to the auction yet, but here are a few examples of her work to whet your appetite.

We asked ceramic artist Lana Wilson to say a few words about Jenny's work:

"Who paints as lushly and generously on clay as Jenny Mendes, the modern Mimbres artist? Do you remember walking into the Barns and  seeing her work? Don't you wish you had started buying her work  then? The details, painterly quality and story lurking around each  piece are some of the appeals of Jenny's work. You almost don't need to be told she has been drawing since Kindergarten. It shows. So get ready to bid on Jenny's work and good luck, because whatever she makes, you will have competition. Nudge away that heavy bidder and hope for the best."
