2011-2012 CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES "MOMENTS IN TIME"
Showcasing a mixture of strings, winds, vocal and piano repertoire
THIS SUNDAY: JUNE 3
"Impressions and Portraits"
Sunday @ 3:00 p.m.
Impressionism in music aims to create descriptive impressions, not necessarily to draw clear pictures. The music is not designed to explicitly describe anything, but rather to create a mood or atmosphere. This is done through almost every aspect of music: melody, harmony, color, rhythm, and form. Surface ornamentation often obscures or substitutes for melody, and there is an avoidance of traditional musical form. Impressionism can be seen as a reaction against the excesses of Romanticism, disrupting the forward motion of standard harmonic progressions.
Programmatic Music, in contrast, has a story attached to it and seeks to describe the story in detail through the music.
