Photodynamic
Therapy (PDT) is a light-based treatment that has been shown to
significantly improve sun damage and acne prone skin. PDT is
a specialized treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent
called Levulan which is subsequently activated with the correct wavelength of light.
Levulan
is a "smart" solution because it is only absorbed by
abnormal cells such as those in acne conditions, pre-cancerous
actinic keratosis,
and sun damage. It is the selectivity of this solution
in targeting only bad cells that allows such quick success in
restoring skin to a healthy normal condition.
The
light source energy is gently absorbed by the skin causing the increased
stimulation of collagen synthesis, softening the appearance of
existing acne scars, fading of discoloration and redness, decreasing pore size and eliminating acne.
Depending upon what you are trying to achieve with PDT, will depend upon which light source will be use.For those with sun damage, age spots and/or pre-cancerous actinic keratoses, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is used. Those with acne conditions, BLU-U Light therapy will be used as your light source.
