balance break Secrets of Spring
March 2008

Watching the world around us is just about the best movie there is. Politics, intrigue, passion, good guys, and bad guys, the twists and turns we're watching now are so incredible from time to time you've just gotta admit your disbelief. And it's not always easy living in a movie as exciting as this, even for a company named Balance.

The New York Post showed up at our class at Yahoo! the other day for a story that's coming out on the 31st and the reporter was eager to ask if we get stressed. DUH! OF COURSE! Ask me how I managed to flub lines on Fox Business. Ask Suann how she forgot to go to a networking she had been looking forward to for weeks. Ask Clara how she felt when she was stuck in a Post Office in LA with 600 frisbees and nowhere to send them. That we respond to these intense feelings of overwhelm well doesn't mean that the overwhelm doesn't happen. Balance wouldn't exist if stress didn't - the tools we teach are ones we rely upon to keep ourselves functioning optimally under any situation.

It's because we KNOW stress happens that we've come up with a really cool contest to make work a better experience for one lucky company. Through March 31st, we're giving a FREE MONTH OF ON-SITE YOGA to whatever company has the most employees to go to our website and click on the little button that says "I want my corporate guru". All you have to do is tell us who we need to get in touch with at your company. Whatever company has the most submissions gets the free classes - and the submission is 100% anonymous! So spread the word - forward this newsletter and tell your coworkers. We can't wait to see you on the mat!

Below you can check out a couple ways we look at the question of secrets. Lead Better offers a look at the secret of knowing yourself in navigating your career. Think Better brings forth an icky secret in the art world. And in Feel Better you'll learn three of the easiest and most powerful self-care practices from the ancient practice of ayurveda.

After all, we love giving away the most helpful secrets.

Be well,

    Feeling Eliot Spitzer?

When I wasn't much older than Ashley Dupre, I was seduced into a job I should have never accepted. Trilingual with a freshly-minted masters degree in international business (and the ego to match), I scoured the earth for a position that was worthy of my brilliance. Working at UPS as corporate marketing liaison for franchisees from Mailboxes Etc., my situation was friendly and challenging but felt a little "brown" in every sense. I wanted sexy. I wanted branding. I wanted to use my languages. I wanted to use my passport.

For a mature executive, even the interview at IBM Latin America would have been a dead-giveaway ...

    The Secret of Doing Good

Welcome to balancebreak. This is where we explore ideas and perspectives about staying whole while navigating the challenges of daily life. So why is there a picture of a dying dog on this article header? Why are you about to read a couple of paragraphs about a Costa Rican artist who captured a street dog, chained him to a wall and forced him to starve as a form of art? Because "Balance isn't about hating your job", to quote my buddy Heather Green of BusinessWeek.

    Tapping Ayurveda's Secrets

We were speaking at The Economist this week and a question came from the crowd of employees about what practice I find most helpful as a self-care preventative against stress. Without thinking I said "dry brush and self massage". Silence ensued. Aside from being unintelligible to most people, acutally sounds slightly tawdry. Truth be told, this is just one of the many ancient "secrets" emerging in the mainstream.
