Choosing the right holsters can be challenging and confusing

Here is a collection of videos that
can help.

Greetings!

I have had the chance to "get away" twice in the month of August, once for training and once to spend time with my sisters and father. These escapes have been my first chance to lift my head up from the computer and all that The Well Armed Woman has been doing these last 7 months. It gave me a chance to "view" it from a distance and see all that has happened with a different pair of eyes.

How refreshing! Sometimes we are so busy with our heads down, plowing ahead and focused on day to day details that it is difficult to keep things in view and see what really is going on.

These two chances to physically remove myself from the daily tasks gave me the opportunity to, number one, see you all with fresh eyes and to admire you for your strength, courage and commitment to safe gun ownership. I am truly in awe of how many of you there are! Secondly, the knowledge you share with others on Facebook and Twitter is outstanding and helps thousands of women. Thirdly, I have been able to re-focus on my passion to encourage and help women discover the life changing and empowering impact becoming self defenders can have as well as to see all of the opportunities that lie ahead for The Well Armed Woman.

If you are burning your candle at both ends and you have your head down in the details life, take a break, lift your head and take a look at the amazing things and people around you.

I grew up in a small town where you could leave your windows open at night, doors unlocked and let your kids walk to school.

I am married, 33, and feel blessed an honored to have my dream job as a journalist. We do not have children (just a four-legged Cairn Terrier mix) and I thoroughly love being an Aunt.

I feel knowing how to defend yourself is pertinent in today's world. I have always been around weapons however, would leave the room if a friend was cleaning their gun. My parent's encouraged me to take Hunter's Safety when I was in sixth grade and that was the extent of my experience.

When I was 22, I was robbed while working late one night at a local electronics store. Later, I found out the man's drug dealer had dropped him off and he had been on a string of robberies. (He's still in prison today, to the last of my knowledge.) Thankfully I wasn't hurt.  I have been a victim more than once.
My husband taught me how to defend myself and he finally convinced me to get a gun and learn how to use it.

I write about home invasions, fatalities, burglaries, robberies and crime on a daily basis now as a reporter. It has been more than empowering to know that I am no longer afraid to be alone. If my husband is working and I'm home alone, I know I can defend myself.

Recently, we moved into a new home in a good neighborhood. I have taken learning the creaks and cracks of the new house as "practice" of sorts.
I can honestly say, ten years ago, if I was home alone and heard a noise--you would probably find me hiding under the bed, crying and shaking in fear. In fact, I used to make a practice of where to hide in a house if I ever needed too. Now, that has changed.

I was home alone one night and heard several strange "thumps" from the basement.
I immediately grabbed the shotgun, cocked it, and began flipping on lights, banging on walls and yelling...needless to say, after checking the house, there was nothing to be found. But that experience let me know how much I have changed. And it felt good.

My husband and I practice home protection techniques by learning how to use (and/or load) our weapons frequently. Including "high anxiety" methods in case we are woken by someone breaking in--we have practiced how to respond. I've also learned methods to disarm an attacker, what to do if knocked to the ground and what to do if someone comes up behind you.

I was very humbled recently while I was hanging out with some girlfriends...after a conversation about self defense very dear friend, who knows much of what I have been through in the past, said to me with a grin, "I'm loving the new empowered Aletheia!"
I am no longer afraid. There is nothing that compares to that feeling and knowing in your heart and soul how to protect yourself.

Sighting Your Gun

Learning how to aim a handgun is one of the most basic skills you will learn when you first acquire your firearm. Properly aiming the handgun is not only a basic part of its normal use, but it is also a vital part of basic firearm safety.

If you find yourself defending your life with a firearm, aiming should be a higher priority than shooting. Whether you are using a revolver or a semi-automatic, learning how to aim a handgun is a critical skill and part of not only effective personal self defense, but part of the enjoyment of shooting. Hitting the target is the target, it is the reason you own a firearm.

The sights are located on the top of the firearm barrel. The front sight should be centered in the notch of the rear sight and the top of the front sight should be level with the top of the rear sight. There are many varieties of sights, but they all serve the same purpose of assisting you in the alignment of the barrel of your firearm with the exact spot you wish to hit. The front sight may be a blade or a dot located at the end of the muzzle and the rear sight may be a U shape, a V shape, two dots, a straight line, or a simple notch in the back edge just above the hammer on a revolver or at the back edge of the slide on a semi-automatic pistol. The type of your sights is less important than your ability to effectively line them up properly to hit your target.

No matter which variety your firearm has, the key skill is to keep your eyes focused on the front sight as it is set within or in alignment with the rear sight.

The charts below can help you understand why you "hit" where you do. Many are related to trigger pull and other issues but sighting and trigger pull they work together. You might find these helpful.
