Happiest of Springs everyone and to you moms, Happy Mother's Day!
Things are beyond busy with The Well Armed Woman - it's wonderful and I am humbled and grateful. We are well over 13,000 fans strong on Facebook and the website get's 10's of thousands of hits a day. The information, participation and sharing that's happening couldn't be any more chock full of insights, ideas, tips and
some amazing stories.
Sadly - the "real world" need to protect ourselves doesn't seem to go away. As women we have had to move into the roll of protector as well as nurturer. Odd bedfellows these two roles are, yet it is necessary that we find the way to do both. Gone are the simple days of the, "You bring home the bacon & I'll cook it" and of our "Knight in shining armor" to protect us. Ladies, many of us are doing it all alone and for others, the scary world outside our doors just has gotten too big and unpredictable for the men in our lives to be able to protect us from it all.
That is what makes you all so amazing. You are taking these challenges head on and taking responsibility for your self protection. You are truly remarkable!

Kelly Adkins Hello from Detroit! My story isn't anything more impressive than anyone else's. I'm a Realtor therefore I live life on the road meeting stranger after stranger thinking the best of most and the worst of some. I've been aware of my surroundings since I was a young girl, but it's so simple to forget that "one" time. And that "one" time was when I was showing a home to someone I believed was "legit" turns out he was creepy and acting very nervous, so when he locked the door leaving just the 2 of us in the home I realized I had not brought my gun and had seconds to make a decision. That decision paid off, I rushed him and spooked him enough that he ran to his car. However, it could have played out a million different ways; all of them leading to violence or worse. Since that day I go nowhere and I mean nowhere without protection. I am a huge advocate for personal protection, my 15 year old daughter could probably shoot better than half the men I know. It takes that "one" time to show you the world isn't that peaceful place and could change your life forever. I used to worry that clients would be skittish or offended if they saw me with my gun(s), now it's part of the package. There is no me without it and if they don't like it they are free to google another realtor. I shoot regularly and promote awareness at all times. Your site is an amazing resource for women, and I thank YOU for promoting it in a positive light. People hear "Detroit" and assume we are all murderers, well most of us are Moms and Dads just wanting to make it home to our families.

| INSTRUCTIONAL TIP -
RACKING THE SLIDE
Just the words Rack The Slide can sound like fingernails scratching on a blackboard or can cause you to feel the pain in your arthritic hands. This really doesn't have to be so, why - because believe it or not it's not all about strength and you don't need manly hands and arms to rack the slide effectively. There also are some good options in firearms that are easier to handle.
It is all about TECHNIQUE. Many instructors, usually male, don't teach the proper technique because technique isn't as important to the stronger handed male. They just do it. Well, for many women - that just doesn't work.
The type of gun does play a role, typically the larger the caliber the firearm, the tighter and more challenging this action can be. Usually, .380's and 9mm (and anything of a lower caliber) have fairly smooth racking. This IS something to consider and why it is so important to handle and try any gun before purchasing. You must be able to work all of the mechanisms properly on a firearm so the size of our hands does matter in effective gun handling.
One more thing before we get to technique and that is I want to mention an alternative type firearm for those of you that just can't manipulate the slide effectively for what ever reason. There are 4 handguns that have what is known as a "tilt up barrel", these types of semi-automatics require no racking of the slide. You can tilt up the barrel and manually load the first round.
It is the energy generated by the firing of the first round that is used to expel the spent casings and draw in the rest of the subsequent rounds. This is why the first round must be chambered manually in any semi-automatic, either by racking the slide or in the case of a tilt up barrel, manually placing it in. Once the first round is in the chamber and the gun fired, the rest of the rounds are chambered "automatically". Hence the name Semi-automatic.
