Head Start Center celebrates Black History Month with special guest
 
 
In commemoration of Black History Month, children at Hay Branson Head Start Center learned of historical African American figures and their contributions to American history. African American authors, athletes and inventors themed this month's lesson plans. 
 
Under the guidance of dynamic duo of Mrs. Carolyn Kelly and Ms. Yniquekeyah Mole, the children received a special visit from none other than Harriet Tubman herself! The children were delighted to hear of her epic tales in conducting the Underground Railroad on her quest to freedom. 
 
The innovative ways Head Start classroom staff are employing to engage children in learning activities is just one example of why Head Start is consistently recognized for excellence in early childhood education.

Inside Look: What does it take to manage volunteers at SHFB? 

 

We recently caught up with SHFB staffer, Laura Henry, who has the herculean task of managing volunteers for the various programs and events of Second Harvest.  Because SHFB relies on volunteers for many of its operational activities and special events, Henry's role directly impacts service delivery to the more than 100,000 individuals served each month. Thank you Laura for all that you do to make lives in our community better.

Volunteers are a big part of the food bank operations, how often do you have a need for volunteers?

LH: We have a need for volunteers in some capacity everyday; however during our slow months, May through September, just like the decrease in food donations, our volunteer participation decreases also. We know that the summer is a busy time for families and students, so we try to implement strategies that allow for a constant flow of people at a decreased level.

 

For what kinds of activities are volunteers most needed?

LH: Most of our volunteers work in the warehouse. Angel Robles, our warehouse manager assigns them to different task ranging from sorting and repacking, to cleaning the cooler and working in the salvage room. We are fortunate that the volunteers that come to us only want to help, there is no task too great or too tedious for our volunteers!

Can you share with us one of the most rewarding experiencesyou have had with a volunteer or group?

LH: One of my most rewarding experiences I had with a volunteer group came from one of the students at Luther Nick Geralds Middle School. This particular young man came out on Saturday with his classmates to volunteer. He had never been to the food bank before, and had only heard about the food bank from his instructor, Mr. Mayhew. Well, this young man told me that he had been hungry before, and that his mother had been places to get his family food and he wondered if the food came from Second Harvest. He went on to say that he was thankful to be able to help at the food bank because he knew what it was like to be hungry and maybe what he was doing was helping someone else just like himself. These interactions reaffirm my commitment to our program and our community. It is rewarding to be in a position that allows me to interact with people from all walks of life.

CCCS volunteers, staff give much needed reassurance during dreaded tax time 

 

With lines around the building well before opening time, they know it will be a long day as soon as they arrive. But our volunteers and staff are armed with the knowledge that they are giving some families a little hope during what can be one of the most dreaded times of the year.  

 

And these families are willing to wait for hours, sometimes the entire day because they know they will save money and most likely earn money by doing so. 

 

Last year, more than 864 individuals received some $2,765,340 in refunds, exemptions and qualifications for which they were entitled, and CCCS is on track to surpass those numbers by April 15 of this year!

CCAP executive leadership set sights on growth, opportunity

Recently, the dedicated group of professionals that compose the CCAP Senior Leadership Team, gathered in a half-day mini-retreat at the Fayetteville Botanical Gardens aimed at identifying the growth opportunities for CCAP and its programs and services.  The group meets bi-weekly throughout the year to maintain consistency agency-wide, but special meetings such as this recent summit set the tone and direction for work performed throughout the year. 

 

Annually CEO Cynthia Wilson leads the Senior Leadership Team through a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats).  Much of this year's discussion was on grant opportunities and choices CCAP has to make for the future.   Additional discussion was on branding CCAP Corporate where the team wrestled with the question, "what distinguishes Corporate from the programs of service?" and "what are the 'selling features' of Corporate?"

Spring Lake residents saving money thanks to CCAP and Kingdom CDC event

On Saturday, February 25, some 40 people turned out at the Spring Lake Recreation Center eager to learn more about making their homes more energy efficient. In the process, participants were given invaluable information that will help them save more money each month by making simple changes to their routine home maintenance and care.

Participants listened to industry experts and observed demonstrations of products that they could easily and cost-efficiently install.  

 

The overwhelming majority of the participants indicated that they would be taking specific action to reduce their energy costs and consumption including, changing light bulbs, adjusting thermostat settings, and making low-cost changes to their appliances and home.

 

Congratulations to participant and Head Start teacher, Eleanor Roderick who won the Kindle Fire.
