Our Specialized Care
October is Depression Awareness Month
Depression is a complex, serious medical condition that causes changes in an individual's thinking, mood or behavior. How can you identify depression in yourself or others? Many people think individuals who are depressed are sad all the time, maybe even suicidal. However, this is not always the case. Here are some changes a person may expereince if they are depressed.
Signs of Depression
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
- Decreased energy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness and/or pessimism
- Insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Irritability, restlessness, feelings of anger with individuals or situations
- Loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed
- Thoughts about death or how life would be better if they were not around
- Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" feelings
If you think you or someone you know may have depression, it's important to get screened. Child & Family Services is offering free depression screenings in October. Call today to talk with a clinician about steps you can take to decrease depression. |

Your Physical & Emotional Health
Manageable Ways to Deal with Change at Your Job
Grieving is not just experienced with the loss of a loved one. People grieve after changes interrupt the regularity and routine of their daily lives. Since change is constant in the workplace, it can be overwhelming to cope with. However, you can control how you respond to change to help you adjust easier.
When Change is on the Horizon...
If you are the type of person that dislikes change, be mindful of your reactions. When changes occur, acknowledge your negative reaction and then determine if you are resisting for a valid reason, or simply because it is your typical reaction to change.
Then, think through the issue and become fully aware of your feelings. If the change may actually benefit you or will not cause harm, consider dropping your barrier and accept the change that is occurring. This reaction will lower your stress level significantly.
Other Suggestions for Coping with Change
- Recognize that change does happen. Just like in our personal lives, we get older, our children get new teachers every year and relationships are always evolving.
- Develop a support system at home with your family and at work with your coworkers.
- Take care of yourself by eating a balanced diet, exercising, getting enough sleep, taking time to relax and enjoying your hobbies. This will keep your mind off changes at work and keep your body healthy too.
- Be flexible, change requires flexibility. The better you are able to adapt to change the greater succes you will have.
- To a self assessment - do your own SWAT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Assets, Threats) analysis of yourself. Be aware of how you are valuable to the workplace and where you may fall short. Make your strengths work for you at all times.
- See the big picture, change can be frightening, but by looking at the big picture you realize the small changes don't matter so much.
- Take control of the choices that you do make for yourself. What are the positive and negative outcomes of these choices? Remind yourself that it's not what actually occurs that will make you unhappy; it's how you react to it.
Having Difficulties?
If you have experienced a big change recently and are experiencing stress and grief, please contact Human Resources Department or contact the Counseling Center at Child & Family Services at 790-7500 to gain help with the changes you are experiencing. |
