Greetings!
This week we feature Lodge on the Desert Chef Ryan Clarke's winning Copper Chef Challenge menu, as well as taking a look at Jax Kitchen's lunch offering. There are a lot of great events next weekend, including Sizzling Women, The Women Chef of Tucson, and a new food truck event, the Tucson Food Truck Round-up!, on November 14 downtown. Speaking of food trucks, I explore calling them chuck wagons in an article this week. Have a great week, enjoy the weather, and the great food wherever you eat!

Tucson's Modern Chuck Wagons
AKA food trucks
Is it a stretch to call a food truck or cart a "chuck wagon"? I think not. Like the mobile kitchens used to feed cowboys, pioneers and even loggers, today's version serves up meals to people on the go, or goes to them. Given Tucson's Wild West and pioneer heritage, it is entirely appropriate, therefore, to call our local food trucks chuck wagons.
While Tucson has long had a number of Mexican food trucks, it is only recently that other types of cuisines have joined the chuck wagon community. We now have gourmet burgers, crepes, shave ice, Asian, Jamaican, subs, ice cream and other sweet treats. With our perfect weather one can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert almost around the clock on a street corner or in a parking lot somewhere in the city.
All chuck wagons in Pima County are regularly inspected by the health deparment. From personal experience, I've never had a bad experience dining at one, which I can't say for some of our stationary eateries. The individuals and families that run these wagons are some of the nicest and hardest working people you'll find in Tucson. Give them and their creations a chance by visiting one this week.
Next Monday evening, November 14, a food truck festival is being held at Dinnerware Artspace, 119 E Toole Avenue, from 5 to 9 pm. This is a perfect opportunity to try a number of chuck wagons at one location, eat some great grub, support local businesses, and a non-profit as well. To assist you in becoming familiar with these modern day chuck wagons in Tucson and beyond, I've included some links about historical chuck wagons and resources about their modern counterparts.
