SAMS Messenger

Dear ,

Perhaps you have just started up at school again or you have sent children, grandchildren, or friends off to school.  As a student, you may already be looking forward to a long break between semesters.  During that break on December 27-31 SAMS will be with 18,000 others in St. Louis at the world's largest student missions conference.  The Urbana Student Missions Conference is an empowering missions event held every three years and is the most diverse gathering of students, recent graduates, missions practitioners and church leaders in North America. The Urbana Conference has the goal to compel this generation to give their whole lives for God's global mission. At the conference SAMS will be sharing opportunities on how you can get engaged in this mission as a goer or a sender.  I invite you to go to Urbana or to help send a student or recent graduate aged 17 to 27 for this amazing opportunity.  If you are considering going, I encourage you to contact Nita Dempsey to apply for a scholarship to reduce the cost of registering to attend Urbana.

In Christ,

Stewart Wicker

Called to Go

Stewart Wicker, Mission Director of SAMS since 2004, shares his mission call beginning with the Urbana Student Missions Conference '81:

As a 20-year-old studying international economic development the world was opened in a new way to me through my experience at Urbana '81.  I began to see pieces coming together of God's very big plan.  The theme "Let Every Tongue Confess That Jesus Christ Is Lord" challenged me to consider my own role in the Great Commission.  Five years following Urbana '81 my wife Laura and I began serving as missionary teachers in the Diocese of Honduras seeking to share the Lordship of Jesus Christ with our students.

Laura and I returned together to Urbana '93 to encourage more young people to consider a calling to global missions.  Now with SAMS having so many opportunities to serve around the world, it is a privilege to return again seeking to encourage young people in their vocational discernment.

Prayer Requests:

Please lift up SAMS missionaries Mike and Kim Miller and their family as they grieve the passing of Kim's father, Edward Henius on August 21st.

Join us in praying for SAMS missionary candidates, Gregory and Heidi Whitaker and Chuck and Beth Bradshaw, who are on site visits to discern their ministry in concert with their sending and receiving churches.  Pray that the Lord would make clear His calling and for travel mercies.

We also ask prayers for the people of the Gulf Coast who are suffering from Hurricane Isaac.  Pray for SAMS Bridger Mary Edna Thompson who is participating in the relief effort in Slidell, LA.

We give thanks to God for the visit from Archbishop-elect Stanley Ntagali of Uganda and his wife Mama Beatrice to our office. Bishop Stanley will be officially installed as Archbishop of Uganda on December 16, 2012 at St. Paul's Cathedral, Namirembe.
