Greetings!
We hope you have been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather we've had so far this Spring in the Northeast.
Our featured learning theme this month is a topic near and dear to our hearts. In this edition of Reaching Your Goals, we focus on the subject of 'managing up'. Not only is this a common area of focus in our executive coaching work, it is also a component of 360 Communication, one of ten 2020 Leadership Competencies we have been highlighting through the AJO Blog. We'll reflect on why success in managing up has gained in prominence and share ideas, tips and resources, including our recommended Spring reading. We hope you'll enjoy.
We've also included some recent reports and studies which you may have missed. Plus, we've highlighted some of the networking events for the coming weeks. Some speakers and topics you won't want to miss are coming to NJ.

Managing Up To Move Up
It's getting harder, but why it's so critical
Increasingly, executives with whom we work desire to
develop their competencies to better manage their bosses and other senior leaders in (and sometimes outside) their organizations. Managing up has become an essential skill for short and long-term success. And yet in today's workplace (and increasingly as we move towards the 2020 workplace), many aspects of today's work life can derail us from successfully managing up. The following are some of the factors that make communication and working relationships more complex today:
- Working Environments: Structures that are more matrix-ed and leveraged versus hierarchical.
- Multiple Bosses: Increased number of executives report having multiple bosses and stakeholders.
- Time and Distance: Increased likelihood of working in a different location from our boss(es), including reporting into national and/or international geographies.
- Work Life: The struggle to manage high workloads in an "always on" world while grappling with time constraints, cultural, generational and work style differences.
