Outplacement News

 March 2012

Greetings!

How do you increase job offer acceptances when relocation is required?

This was a question posed to AJO late last year. Our client was looking for creative ways to increase the acceptance rates of job offers made to prospective employees who were being asked to relocate to the Northeast United States from other parts of the U.S. (E.g. sunny warm south), as well as internationally.

A tall order given the current housing market, employment landscape for dual income partner/spouses and oh yes, let's not forget the Northeast Winters that were giving pause for thought.

As we researched the region, we discovered that culturally, the area in question lacked diversity too, creating a real possibility of failure for the diverse cultural and International backgrounds of those considering moving there. Concerns about relocation are emotional, social and financial in nature. Dual career families need to know that there's a chance of finding new social networks and new employment.

Surprisingly, less than one in two organizations offer spouse/partner relocation assistance, according to Atlas, which also tracks the number of relocation declines, as highlighted in the chart above. All the more surprising when you consider that 41% of the declines are connected to a spouse/partner's employment.

In this edition of Outplacement News, we are focusing on relocation and best practices for supporting employees and their families during relocation. We begin with a new report that looks at global trends in relocation before sharing AJO's answer to the relocation conundrum.

Trends in International Relocation

In a new report published in Jan 2012, entitled Expat 2.0: The Global Executive, search firm SpencerStuart highlighted two trends in selecting executives for international assignments:
  • Leaders are being sourced from a broader geographic pool was typical in the past when the "Western executive" was the norm. Organizations are more attentive to skillsets and the personality required for success in international assignments. Qualities such as humility, sensitivity, intellectual curiosity and agility were highlighted.
  • A growing preference for developing and deploying local talent with the skills and local market knowledge necessary to manage and grow businesses locally.

Supporting Spouse/Partner Relocation
Career Transition Assistance
While most of our clients think of outplacement when they think of AJO, we can and do support organizations with spouse/partner relocation, using the same personalized consulting support and powerful technology for which we are known. Our primary goal is to identify needs and develop a plan that facilitates early assimilation to the new location and labor market. This includes developing new networks, researching the market, creating marketing tools (offline and online), assisting with strategies and skill development in all aspects of job search. Most spouse/partners are grappling with a myriad of time demands when they settle into a new location and our goal is to help manage the stress by good planning, focused execution and caring support.

We can also offer "pre-decision support" by helping spouse/partners assess their marketability in the target location.

A Client's Perspective:
"My organization is a part of a growing technology company that hires people from all over the world. Increasingly, our hires have a spouse (or significant other) that needs assistance finding employment in our area. We hand these folks off to AJ O'Connor confidently - and they take over the process from there. The satisfaction levels of our referrals have been very high as the staff has worked creatively and aggressively to help them find employment. This is an important service for us as frequently a valuable employee's retention hangs on the ability of their spouse to find meaningful employment. I have worked with a few firms in this endeavor over the years and AJ O'Connor is by far the best. I recommend them strongly."

Spouse/Partner Perspective:
"It was a pleasure working with my consultant as she genuinely cared for my interests. She always made me feel good about my accomplishments. The website had a ton of resources ranging from the companies I was interested in to list of questions that can be asked in interviews. It also had job postings, insight on industries and general information about the city that I had relocated to. I am really enjoying my new position as it challenges me and gives me an opportunity to grow."

If you'd like to learn more about how we're helping organizations with spouse/partner relocation, give us a call. We'd be glad to tailor services to meet your organization's needs.

Sincerely,

Andy
