Greetings!
I trust your 2012 is off to a great start? As we think about the new year, it's worth reflecting for a moment on the the pace of change, which quietly accelerates with increasing momentum. Economist James D. Hamilton of the University of California recently shared in a Business Week article:
"In 2005 the average U.S. worker could produce what would have required two people to do in 1970, what would have required four people in 1940, and would have required six people in 1910."
At AJO, we have been researching workforce trends and their demands on current and future leaders in particular and as such, this is our featured topic for this edition.
We've also added a new section in which we share some great studies we've come across that you may have missed. The first one is a MUST READ for HR professionals in particular. It identifies the six competencies required of HR, most of which overlap with Leader 2020 competencies that we've identified through our research.
We hope you enjoy what we've assembled - do let us know!

Leadership 2020
What are the top 10 workforce trends? What are the 10 critical leadership competencies they will demand?
In late 2011, we completed an extensive literature review, tapping into a wealth of thought leadership on workforce trends and the leadership competencies that these trends will demand.
Our last two blog postings have focused on the subject of future work as well as the implications for leadership development. Future leaders will need to quickly assimilate and communicate future trends that impact the business. They will need to be skilled in leading very diverse employee populations. They will need to be continual learners who can leverage technology to enable new ways of working, recognizing that individuals are more powerful than ever, with valuable networks that transcend corporate boundaries.
In the coming weeks, we'll blog on each of the following Leader 2020 competencies that will be critical for the success of future leaders:
