"Transforming Tiverton" - New Video Donated by Local Small Business
When Bob Perron, proprietor of South Coast Multimedia, a small business in Tiverton, checked out the Community Support page on the new library website, he decided to do more than post a statement of support for a new library. He produced, pro bono, a seven and a half minute video that captures what a new library can do for the Town of Tiverton.
Bob, working closely with his wife Renée, wrote the script, shot video footage, edited and produced the new video, which he titled "Transforming Tiverton: A Vision for the Future."
"The Essex and Union Libraries are staffed with extremely helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable professionals," Bob said, "but the facilities themselves have become woefully inadequate for our town. The new Tiverton Library will transform Tiverton. It will become a hub of community service and activity, offering expanded services to local businesses, clubs and organizations, children, teens, adults, the elderly, the unemployed, the retired - everyone. The new library will not only be a real source of pride for our community, it will play an active role in revitalizing and energizing it." "It is has been our great pleasure to produce the short video presentation as our contribution to this worthwhile and necessary cause," Bob added. "Tiverton is a great place to call home and the people of Tiverton deserve this new facility. We made this video to encourage residents to transform some of our old ideas of what a library is and to visualize what our library could become, if we had the proper facilities."
The library community, who previewed the video, gave it rave reviews. Library Trustee Chair Barbara Donnelly called it "professional grade, a video that truly captures our vision about what a library can be for Tiverton."The Trustees hope to show the video on local cable access television and plan to incorporate it into their presentations to organizations in the fall.In addition, anyone who watches the video online can easily "embed" the video on their websites or Facebook pages.
South Coast Multimedia was launched in 2003, as Homespun Multimedia, filming and producing seminars and training films for businesses and organizations. In 2008, it began filming original documentaries and educational DVDs. In 2010, it expanded to include the production of online video commercials, as well as producing video and graphic designs for both the web and print.

John Clarke Trust Pledges $50,000 for New Library
The trustees of the John Clarke Trust announced an award of a $50,000 grant to the Tiverton Library Foundation for the construction of the new Tiverton public library. The John Clarke Trust, established in 1676, is the oldest charitable trust in America.
"This will be a multi-year grant of $10,000 per year for five years. I am delighted about this," Barbara Watterson, a trustee of the John Clark Trust, said. "The Tiverton Library Foundation's proposal to use these funds for the children and teen's sections of the new library provided a perfect opportunity to grant the funds according to Dr. Clarke's wishes."
According to Eileen Browning, the principal grant writer for the Tiverton Library Foundation, "The award from the John Clarke Trust will help fund the construction of both the children's wing and the young adult room of the new library. The grant also pushes us closer to our goal of securing $2.5 million in grants for library construction."
"We are grateful to the Trust for this generous contribution," said Barbara Donnelly, chair of the Board of Trustees of Tiverton Library Services. "These funds ultimately will help us expand library programs and services for children and teens in our community, as well as offer parent literacy programs that enable the adults in their lives to be part of their life-long learning process."
Dating from April 20, 1676, this historic trust was created under the will of Dr. John Clarke, a Baptist clergyman and physician and one of the co-founders of the first European settlement on Aquidneck Island in 1638.He was born in 1609 and arrived in Boston in 1637 and was one of the company of some three hundred persons that founded the colony on Aquidneck Island. He was the author of the Royal Charter of 1663 that maintained Rhode Island as a colony. Dr. Clarke was married three times but had no surviving children. He practiced medicine, was a minister, and held public office, although his chief interest was that of the Christian ministry. He was also very interested in education and was probably involved in establishing a free school for Newport in 1640.
In his will, written on the date of his death, John Clarke established a perpetual charitable trust. He directed that the income from the trust be used "for the relief of the poor or bringing up of children unto learning from time to time forever."
Tiverton Library Foundation, Inc. is organized as a non-profit organization to secure contributions to support the operational and capital needs of the Tiverton Public Library.

The Tiverton Library Foundation's Capital Campaign Leadership Committee has been working quietly for the last six months during the "silent phase" of the Capital Campaign - and their motivation and experience is paying off. The campaign has received pledges for 60% of its goal of $2.5 million to help fund the construction of the new Tiverton library.
Each campaign leader brings credentials that should make Tiverton proud.Campaign co-chair Dr. Anthony H. Cincotta is president, chief science officer and founder of VeroScience, a Tiverton-based biotechnology company focused on the development of therapies and products for metabolic diseases and immunological disorders.
Linda Jenkins, who co-chairs the committee with Anthony, has been an active volunteer in Tiverton since her retirement to Rhode Island. She has served as president of the Tiverton Garden Club and is a member of the Stone Bridge Committee, The Friends of Tiverton Libraries, and the Gray League of Women Voters. Prior to her retirement, Linda served as literacy coordinator for the Altadena (CA) Public Library and a Community Relations consultant for Chanon and Associates, serving clients in Los Angeles County. Linda proudly boasts, "We have a home library and a poster of the Library of Congress in our front hall!"
Barbara Donnelly, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Tiverton Library Services, serves double duty as a member of the campaign leadership committee. Barbara earned a Masters in Library Science from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She has worked as a reference librarian at the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, MD, and University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, and a school librarian in the Tiverton Public Schools. Currently, Barbara is the cataloging, reference and collection development librarian at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport.
Prior to his retirement in 2000, Dr. Lee Hoyer was Vice President for Biomedical Research and Director of the Jerome Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross Biomedical Services. Previously he had been a member of the founding faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where he was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Hematology Division until 1985. Much of his early retirement was spent sailing in the Caribbean and he and his wife Cary Bailey moved to Tiverton four years ago. Lee also serves as a Trustee of Tiverton Library Services and as Chair of the Library Building Committee.
Rounding out the committee is J.P. Schuyler, Chair of the non-profit Tiverton Library Foundation. Phil is a retired professor of history. Prior to moving to Tiverton in 1999, he taught Modern European History at Roger Williams University for several decades. Before that he also taught at the University of Rochester and Vassar College. Since becoming a citizen of Tiverton, he has served on the Town's Open Space Commission and on various library boards and committees.

Town Administrator Calculates Latest Cost of New Library for Property Owners
If voters approve the library construction bond on November 8, Jim Goncalo, Tiverton Town Administrator, said that the incremental increase in property taxes would be $0.10 per thousand valuation. The calculation is based on the Town's contribution of $2.9 million at an anticipated interest rate of 4.5%. The balance of the $7 million bond would be paid by the State's Library Construction Reimbursement Fund.Explaining the calculation, Jim said the Town's contribution would be $220,000 per year for 20 years, including interest. The $220,000 divided by the value of the Town $2.193700 billion yields an impact of $.10 per thousand of valuation.

Face to Face - In The Community
There's nothing quite like a face-to-face meeting when you want to know the facts. You get a chance to listen, to question, and to make an informed decision.
Since last fall, The Trustees have met with 16 Town organizations - nearly 600 Town residents in face-to-face meetings. We have also manned information tables at several Town events: Opening Day of Little League, The Children's Summer Library Programs, The Union Library Book Sale - where more folks were able to get the facts first-hand. And we look forward to participating in Pardon Gray Day on September 17, greeting parents during the Open House at each Tiverton school, meeting with the School Committee, the Lion's Club, the Amicable Church community, the Knights of Columbus, the Tiverton Senior Center, and Sakonnet Bay Manor in September.
If you want a face-to-face meeting with a Library Trustee or Building Committee member this fall, we'd love to meet with you. Consider getting a few of your neighbors together - and tell us where and when. For organizations, add us as an "agenda item" for one of your regular meetings. We have a concise, informative 15-minute presentation, followed by Q&A.
Make an informed decision on November 8. Let's have a face-to-face meeting. We'll come to you!

Tiverton Garden Club President Leanora Graves and FOTL President Kathy Ryan pause for the camera after Kathy spoke about the vision for Tiverton Library Services to more than 50 members of the garden club on July 25 at the Amicable Church. Following Kathy's presentation, Lesley Wooler, proprietor of The Herb Wyfe in Wickford, RI, spoke about varieties of herbs and flowers people can plant in their gardens to use for health and beauty. |

Did You Know?
Libraries play an important role in the community by providing services, activities and materials. This summer Tiverton children utilized their library by reading over 8,000 books. If the parents, grandparents and caregivers of these children purchased 8,000 paperbacks this summer, at a conservative average price of $6.99 per book, the total collective out-of-pocket expense would have been $55,920!
