Sweaty Betties return to LAB5 & Lululemon Trunk Show:
On Saturday, January 14th, LAB5 hosted our second exclusive event with the Sweaty Betties, and we had such a great time. What made the day even more special was a Trunk Show put on by the University Village Lululemon Athletica.
Thank you to both parties for choosing LAB5 to host your event. We love rolling out the red carpet for small parties of fitness minded friends, and couldn't have asked for a better Saturday afternoon at the LAB.
Do you have a group of friends or family you'd like to share the LAB5 Love with? Contact us to host your own private fitness event. Valentines Day Date Night at LAB5: Looking for the best way to kindle an extra spark between you and your Valentine? Studies show that working out with your partner benefits your relationship!

LAB5 HIGH5!
Pauline Rivera
 | | Pauline Rivera |
Started at LAB5: April 2011, I took 3 months off to train for a half-marathon in June and a summer dance intensive in July, then returned in August.
Favorite workout moves:
Ballet: whatever fun stuff Sean comes up with =)
Pilates: mermaid, short spine, and of course, leg circles!
TRX: Single leg squat to arabesque
Hobbies: Cooking, dancing to and listening to good music, reading, furniture shopping, trying out new restaurants (I love a good Happy Hour!), spending time with close friends and family, watching movies, and showing off my hometown of Seattle to others that didn't grow up here---especially during the summertime.
Pets?: My beloved box turtle of 15+ years (Levi) passed away in August :( and I have no future plans to replace him since the idea is just too sad.
Anything else you'd like to share: I love the environment of LAB5 in that I feel supported and motivated to keep coming back. The trainers, staff, and other LAB5ers that I work out with are all so friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. I agree with Bonnie that when working out at LAB5, it feels good to have that time all for yourself - both mentally and physically. Joining LAB5 has been a huge part of me "taking my life back". I'm thoroughly grateful that a good friend/neighbor let me know about LAB5 last spring.
Pauline has been an essential part of the LAB5 community since April 9th (the very first day we opened our doors)! Her positivity, kindness and dedication have set her apart from the beginning. We are grateful to have Pauline at LAB5 and appreciate all that does with LAB5.
Thank you Pauline, and congratulations!

Keeping Your Kids Happy & Healthy in 2012!
Fitness levels among kids are on the decline. Many studies have shown only one in four American school children gets an adequate amount of physical activity each day. If that's not devastating enough news--the number of overweight children is growing rapidly. Almost 37 percent of 6 to 11-year olds are obese. Children should have at least 35 to 60 minutes of exercise each day to keep them happy and healthy. Without it, they can miss their chance to build the strong bones they will need later in life. Bones grow in size and strength during childhood. The bone mass gained through physical activity during childhood helps determine how healthy bones will be throughout life.
Your child can be fit even if he or she is not into the traditional sports teams. The key is finding activities your child enjoys...

Setting Goals, Tracking Progress, & Seeing Results
As the new year begins, so many people get renewed focus on health and fitness goals. It seems everyone has the same goal: to see results and measure progress. Sometimes the way we track our progress can help, but sometimes it may even discourage us. Here are a few principles that can help Lab5ers see their results and feel great about themselves.
Everyone has a different goal. Some wish to lose weight. Some want to build muscle tone. Some seek greater strength and to perform better exercising. Our training has even been included in pre-marathon training. Some even want a combination of all these goals. The dreaded scale has been a long time staple for measuring progress. Society has conditioned us, especially women, to believe that the number on the scale is everything. Many people obsess over this number, or have a strong emotional attachment to it. The scale, however, is of only one tool in tracking progress...

Saucy Health
Sun Dried Tomatoes
Ingredients:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees F
2. Wash and halve tomatoes. Gently squeeze out the seeds. Place the tomatoes on a non-stick cookie sheet, and sprinkle with salt to taste.
3. Bake until tomatoes take on a leathery texture. This could literally take all day; smaller pieces will require less oven time.
We love this recipe for the simplicity. LAB5 Modifications, skip the salt and use lemon-juice instead.

Spreading the LAB5 Love
As Valentine's Day approaches it always makes me think of the symbol that represents it: a heart. The heart has two meanings for me, love and health. I am extremely blessed in both areas. Let me start with the love side and a quote, "Grow old with me the best is yet to be." The quote speaks very loudly to me, Alan and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in June. This is a huge accomplishment to which I give him the majority of credit for. He is a wise, kind, loving and giving man. LAB5 Fitness Studio is an example of all these qualities. Opening a fitness studio was not a passion of his, it was mine, yet that is exactly what he has done. A tangible example of his love.
Interesting how LAB5 represents health and how the two sides of the heart exist and are manifested right at 606 Broadway E. I am so encouraged, inspired by each of you in our community and grateful to have met each one of you. Health is such an enormous factor in our ability to enjoy and live life. I believe the time spent at LAB5 will enhance your health and add to your happiness.
Referring back to Robert Browning's quote, "Grow old with me, the best is yet to be." it sums up our feeling for LAB5. A special thank you to Alan, from my heart, for this amazing gift.
Feeling the LAB5 Love,
