How to Flourish in the Spring

Spring is so beautiful, but it can be so hard on your body. All the sniffling and sneezing from allergies. Red, itchy eyes. Feeling cranky. Spring should be a time when you flourish. You are coming out of winter, the sun starts to warm up the day, flowers fill up the landscape. Have you ever noticed you're not enjoying Spring to your full potential?

This is an age-old problem, written about by the Chinese over 2,000 years ago. Over time, Chinese medicine has developed simple and effective ways to live in accordance with the seasons, so that your struggle can be lessened.

It is said that Spring is the time of the free and easy wanderer. The ancient Chinese classics say it is a time to let down one's hair. Loosen up a little. A lot of difficult transitions are happening and by realizing it is partly just the nature of this season, you are free to be as 'go-with-the-flow' as you can be. It will benefit you greatly.

When it comes to food, go for fresh spring greens and veggies. Stay away from salty foods like chips and soda. Salty foods encourage the body to store, but Spring is the time for letting go of things. Try to incorporate a little sour everyday as it will help the body's strength and integrity during Spring's strong outward motion.

Spring is a great time to start exercising, but a common mistake is going too hard too quick. Start off slow. Go for some walks. Stretch. Taiji (Tai Chi) and Qigong are great ideas as they are perfectly balanced workouts. And TLC offers classes for all skill-levels in both! Slowly increase the amount of exercise, but wait to go hard until at least mid-March.

Hopefully by incorporating these simple techniques, you will be able to spend less time sniffling and more time enjoying the beauty of Spring as a free and easy wanderer!

Yi Jing (I Ching) Mastery Course I ~ One-Day Intensive

The Yi Jing (I Ching) is an ancient Chinese divination text that traces its origin to well before 2000 B.C. In this 1-day intensive (the first course in a series of 3) we will introduce the text and take a traditional approach to learning the fundamentals: including history, translation recommendations, learning to read hexagrams, learning the trigrams, etc. This first class will go over the basics from an intellectual standpoint, and from a personal standpoint you will begin to build your own relationship with the book. First course in a series of 3 courses for building mastery.

Sunday March 11th 12-4p at TLC. $25 a person. Contact Emaline at [email protected] or call 502-330-4233 to register.

If you would like a precursor, join us for our free 2nd Friday Lecture on March 9th on the Yi Jing (I Ching- often translated as The Book of Changes).
