I look forward to hearing from you.

Denise

Typically in April, I produce my annual "Earth Day" edition of the newsletter. This year's theme was to be "sustainability," and I got an early start preparing it. April has come and gone, and I've been through my sixth House budget - but that April edition will have to wait for May.

In the meantime, here are some events and announcements that relate to the theme of sustainability, with its three interrelated elements of environment, community, and economy. I hope you'll be able to participate.

Jane's Walk

Jane Jacobs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Jacobs) was a visionary writer with an understanding of what makes cities work (or not). Her work has influenced all subsequent thought about urban planning and design. Her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (http://www.wikisummaries.org/The_Death_and_Life_of_Great_American_Cities) is widely credited with saving Boston's North End from the wrecking ball - the fate that befell the lamented West End.

On Saturday, May 7, 2011, Union Square Main Streets is sponsoring "Jane's Walk," in homage to the Mother of the New Urbanism Smart Growth, Transit-Oriented Development, and all the other movements she has engendered.

Join us at 10am at Bloc 11, 11 Bow Street, for a guided tour of the past, present, and future of Union Square. For more details, and a map of the walk, visit:

Celebrating Our Rivers in Film

On Monday, May 9, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm, Somerville Climate Action and the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA), along with myself, are hosting two films,  Waters of Missi-tuk  and The Work of 1000 at Sprout, located on 339R Summer St, Somerville, MA (Directions).

The first film, Waters of Missi-Tuk, is a 27-minute film that offers a 400-year historical review of the development of the Mystic River Watershed, followed by The Work of 1000, about environmental visionary and citizen activist Marion Stoddart, who helped turn the Nashua River from one of the most polluted rivers in America into a clean, healthy environment for wildlife and people.

We will be joined by the filmmakers of Missi-Tuk, Bob Nesson and Chris Summerfield, and by Beth Meserve of Mystic River Watershed Association.

Eating Well, While Supporting the Local Economy

A) There IS Such a Thing as Free Lunch - Join a Shape Up Approved Tasting!

Shape Up Somerville has just launched a new component to the Shape Up Approved healthy restaurant program.  We're inviting community members to join us at participating restaurants across the City to try out their healthy menu items during lunch.  What's the catch?  Shape Up Somerville is asking tasters to write a Facebook review of what they've sampled.  Check out their Facebook page for pictures of their first tasting at On the Hill Tavern.  Email Jaime at jcorliss@somervillema.gov to join a future tasting.

B) Winter Farmers Market

Thanks to all who shopped or supported the Somerville Winter Farmers Market.  We had a great first season!  Please let Jaime at jcorliss@somervillema.gov know if you're interested in joining the planning group for the market.  Our top priority will be the identification of funds to extend the season from November through May.

C) YUM is back!

The Welcome Project is bringing back its successful "Yum" discount card - a fundraiser and celebration of immigrant-run restaurants in Somerville. Support the Welcome Project while enjoying h Shape Up Approved restaurants, such as Fasika, Maya Sol, Ronnarong Thai Tapas Bar & Sabur.  Details can be found on the Welcome Project website

Employment and Other Opportunities

A) Committee Counsel Position

The House Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets is accepting applications to fill the position of Committee Counsel.  Interested applicants should forward a resume and cover letter to the committee's staff director at mark.merante@mahouse.gov.

B) DCR Seasonal

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has announced vacancies for various positions within the department, including lifeguards and other seasonal workers. These jobs are being posted to their website (http://www.mass.gov/dcr/employment.htm). Interested parties should apply directly to the DCR Human Resources Division. For application procedures and guidelines, visit: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/l-guard/apply.htm.

C) Internship Office

Early this month, the state launched a web site that it hopes will serve as a clearinghouse for internship opportunities in Massachusetts.  The site is part of an effort to encourage college students and recent graduates to stay in Massachusetts. The site currently features more than 100 internships, including posts from iRobot, Karmaloop, Endeca, Big Belly Solar, 451 Marketing and Vistaprint.  The site address is www.massitsallhere.com/stayhere.
