Letter Number 20 August 29, 2012
|
It's back-to-school time and this month's issue provides an apt teaching mode. I pack as much punch as possible into an investment video providing easy portfolios that worked extremely well during the "lost decade." Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are not teachers per se, yet Buffett, in particular, is someone people can listen to for hours. Ray Lucia and the "Brain Trust" of CFPs and tax attorney have provide excellent content on the radio for years. The same can be said for Paul Merriman, one of the best teachers of proper investing. I've followed his model portfolios for years, along with other academically based systems. Merriman podcasts and Lucia radio shows can be found online. Click on either The Ray Lucia Show or Paul Merriman. Don't miss Tim Clue at the end. He takes debt head-on with a dull rubber chicken.

Investments 2012 in 14 Minutes: How Dentists Survived the Great Recession
If you wish to forward this easily, just copy and paste the URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNCmrvilyAcCarlsen covers how much to save, basic asset allocation, risk tolerance, market timing, active vs. passive strategy, tax efficiency, and rebalancing, all from the academic viewpoint. He then provides simple portfolio strategies that made it through the dot/com bust of 2001-2002 and the Great Recession of 2008-2009. Dentist Bottom Line: Many may think the portfolios are way too simple for the "sophisticated" investor. Nothing is further from the truth, according to Warren Buffet, John Bogle, Burton Malkiel, Andrew Tobias and other academicians.
Don't get trapped into the hedge fund, promissory note, prime bank, ultra-short ETF, and variable annuity fiascoes. Options trading, long-short trading, and technical analysis are only for those that commit many hours per week. And losers vastly outnumber the winners. |
Gates and Buffett Comment on Gold
7 minute video Both Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have strong comments on owning gold as an investment. Bottom LIne: Warren is a hoot to listen to! He talks gold, cows, and paper money. And the cow part is the best! Don't miss around the 5 minute mark. |

Ray Lucia: Timing the Market
2 minute video
Lucia has a popular financial talk show that I listen to most days. If you haven't heard, look for him on a local station near the noon hour or catch his show at the link in the first paragraph of the newsletter.
Does market timing, or getting in and out make sense? Academics have panned it for years. How does a top financial firm view it?
Ray has many cogent short videos that hit home.
Click here for a link to his You Tube channel.
Dentist Bottom Line: Now more than ever is not a time to play games with market timing. Both brokers and individuals have lost fortunes over decades using "gurus" that absolutely know when to move in and out!

Mutual Fund Advice from Paul Merriman
6 minute video
Paul Merriman, whose fundadvice.com portfolios I've used personally, comments on whether load funds from brokers are worth the extra money. He goes on to comment on Morningstar ratings for fund picking.
Dentist Bottom Line: Academic research has shown that the general public beats broker's fund picks for a higher return without taking into account the broker's load and other fees!
Morningstar Ratings? Merriman offers how well 5 star and 4 star funds do against the rest, and it ain't pretty! |
Humor: Tim Clue knows How to Handle Debt!
6 minute video
Seinfeld writer Tim Clue has all the answers to debt.
Dentist Bottom Line: Where's the problem?!
