Georgia CASA Selected for Walmart's Associate Choice Program
Georgia CASA has been selected as one of five Georgia nonprofit organizations to compete in The Walmart Foundation's Associate Choice Program in Georgia.
All Walmart and Sam's Club associates in Geogia will have the opportunity to vote for one nonprofit between June 18th and August 6th. The nonprofit that receives the most votes will be chosen as Georgia's "Associate Choice Winner" and will receive a $100,000 grant. The remaining four nonprofits will each receive $10,000 grants.
If you know of people who work at Walmart and/or Sam's Club, please tell them about CASA and encourage them to vote for CASA. Please note that guidelines stipulate to not contact associates on store property.
The Walmart Foundation strives to create opportunities so people can live better. In all its giving efforts, it strives to meet the unmet needs of underserved populations and support organizations that give individuals access to a better life. It believes in operating globally and giving back locally, which is why the majority of its charitable giving is done locally and in partnership with the associates. Walmart associates are proud of the difference they make in their local communities and feel good about giving back to the places their friends and families live.
With its commitment to involving its associates in mind, The Walmart Foundation created the Associate Choice Program, allowing Walmart and Sam's Club associates to vote on the causes that they identify as important to the company and their community.

CASA Awareness Day at the Atlanta Braves Game on September 3rd
We hope you are planning to join us at Turner Field on Saturday, September 3rd for our third annual CASA Awareness Day at the Atlanta Braves game! Enjoy a Saturday at the ballpark with family and friends as CASA supporters from across the state come together to raise awareness of the CASA organization and as we show appreciation to CASA volunteers for the work they do in advocating for children. The day will include a tailgating party, CASA parade around the field and an on-field presentation just prior to the game when the Braves take on the L.A. Dodgers at 7 p.m. If you have not already secured your spot through your local affiliate CASA program, you can still purchase tickets at the CASA group rate. Please contact your local affiliate CASA program for the details or you can order your tickets through the Braves directly - Stacey Nicely, stacey.nicely@braves.com or 404-614-1325. (Please note that some local affiliate programs may not be participating but you can still purchase tickets through the Braves.) |

CAPTA 2010: A Summary
CAPTA stands for the national Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. Originally created in 1974, the Act was reauthorized by Congress in December 2010. CASA programs nationwide that receive funding from The National CASA Association receive pass-through funding directly related to CAPTA. When CAPTA was reauthorized in 2010, several new provisions were included. You can click here for a short, easy read on CAPTA and its provisions. |

Metro Atlanta CASA Collaborative News
The Metro Atlanta CASA Collaborative, which includes the metro affiliate CASA programs in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties, along with Georgia CASA, was started in 2004 to launch a cooperative campaign designed to recruit, train and retain a CASA volunteer force large enough to serve the metro Atlanta area. In 2006, the first recruitment and training campaign was held, and since that time, over 400 new CASA volunteers have been trained through the Collaborative. In fiscal year 2010-2011, the Metro Collaborative held fall and winter training sessions with 96 new CASA volunteers sworn-in. Additionally, a summer training session is currently being held with 35 trainees. The effort of collaborating has far surpassed the individual recruitment and training efforts of each metro affiliate program, resulting in consistently well-trained CASA volunteers who provide a high level of quality advocacy to the abused and neglected children they serve. For more information about the Metro Collaborative, visit its newly redesigned web site at www.metrocasa.org. |

Affiliate Program Highlights
CASA for Children in Cherokee County was featured in four newspaper articles in The Cherokee Tribune in April. (April was National Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month.) The affiliate CASA program has been busy building public relations in its community.
Children's Voice: CASA, serving Douglas County, recently received a grant from Greystone Power to help with expenses related to the training of CASA volunteers. The affiliate CASA program also recently received a $2,500 donation from a board member to buy gas cards for CASA volunteers who report their hours and mileage at the end of each quarter. What a great incentive for CASA volunteers to turn in timely reports! Hall-Dawson CASA, located in Gainesville, was featured in an online article by The National CASA Association about its Women Working Wonders (WWW) fundraiser. Each woman that joins WWW pledges $100 annually. To date, 115 women have joined and over $11,500 has been raised. Read the article here. |

Thank You to Our Donors for Spring 2011
Our donors help Georgia CASA to have a significant impact on the work of our affiliate CASA programs statewide. We would like to especially thank our donors for Spring 2011! Thank you for supporting the work of CASA volunteers like Chris...
CASA volunteer Chris* recently advocated for a teenage boy, James,* who had been in foster care for five years in western Georgia. James's permanency plan was to age out of the foster care system. Once Chris was appointed to James's case, he took the time to build trust and a relationship with James and was determined to identify a better outcome. Chris helped to locate James' older brother, who turned out to be a potential placement resource. Chris not only advocated for James, but also supported his brother while he took the steps to bring James into his home. James now has permanency and has been reunified with family, as he lives with his older brother, thanks in large part to the consistency, investigation and devotion of his CASA volunteer.
