Advocates Gather at the Capitol on Feb. 8th

JUSTGeorgia/CASA Day at the Capitol, sponsored in part by Peach State Health Plan, took place on February 8th and was very successful. Over 250 CASA volunteers, board members and staff and JUSTGeorgia coalition members from across the state met with 35 members of the Georgia Legislature to share their concerns and ask for support for the abused and neglected children in the care of the state. Legislators were asked to also support House Bill 23 - monitoring psychotropic medications for foster children - and the Child Protection & Public Safety Act, the Children's Code Rewrite.

The day began with a legislative briefing, followed by a CASA proclamation presented to the group by Governor Nathan Deal. After meeting with legislators, the day concluded with a luncheon for the legislators. Remarks given by Speaker of the House David Ralston were the highlight of the luncheon.

Donors for 2010 Year-End Annual Fund
Georgia CASA gratefully acknowledges everyone who contributed to our year-end 2010 annual fund. Donors make it possible for us to continue to develop and support affiliate CASA programs throughout the state, as we work towards the goal of having a CASA volunteer appointed for each child who needs one. Thank you for your support of the CASA organization in Georgia!
Affiliate Program Highlights
Savannah/Chatham County CASA held Dancing with the Savannah Stars in November. The fundraiser, which had great media coverage, included eight local celebrities who learned a choreographed dance from a  professional dancer that was then performed on the event night. The Savannah Stars helped raise money and awareness by securing sponsors and generating votes.

Chattahoochee CASA, serving Muscogee County, recently held its first volunteer fundraiser, The Money Tree. CASA volunteers were asked to speak to ten people about becoming a CASA volunteer and ask for a $10 donation.

Coastal Plain CASA, serving Irwin, Tift, Turner and Worth counties, raised $7,500 from its December CASA playhouses raffle. Of special note: A group of disabled veterans from Pennsylvania purchased 260 tickets and won a playhouse, then donated the playhouse to a local foster home!

Piedmont CASA, serving Banks, Barrow and Jackson counties, participated with Georgia CASA in a recent interview about the child welfare system in the U.S. A representative from the State Department interviewed a former CASA youth, along with her CASA volunteer and fictive parents, as well as Duaine Hathaway from Georgia CASA. This interview segment will be aired in Tajikistan.

Cobb County CASA was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the CarMax Foundation because of the efforts of a CASA volunteer, who is also a CarMax employee. She was recognized by CarMax for her community service and the CASA program was awarded as well!
