Miles Wilson

For Miles Wilson, it was the ultimate lesson of the power of networking.
As a NELI Fellow in 2007-08, he attended sessions on finance given by the Non-Profit Finance Fund (NFF), a national organization offering financing, consulting and advocacy services to non-profits and funders. One of his instructors was its regional vice president, Garvester Kelly.
Fast forward to earlier this year. His executive vice president's position at the People's Emergency Center (PEC) was about to become a victim of the economic downturn and he was job-hunting. Greetings!
The 2010 class of NELI Fellows graduated last week on November 13th! It was a very special week-end, filled with great training sessions, terrific presentations on everyone's Action Projects, and an inspiring speech by our wonderful guest speaker, Frances Hesselbein, President and CEO of the Leader to Leader Institute. I'm still smiling!
Before we all take a break for Thanksgiving, I wanted to tell you about two NEW workshops that we are offering in December, that will both help you bring new resources into your agencies and save you money. One focuses on recruiting specialized volunteers; the other helps you avoid high costs for your audit.
In the past we would have called these "alumni" workshops. Now we are opening these programs to the larger community, with a discounted price to NELI Fellows and graduates.
Also, please remember to tell your the new Ascending Leadership Certificate - applications are due November 29th!
I wish you all a beautiful Thanksgiving with family and friends!
Sincerely, Margie DuBrow NELI Director

| For non-profits seeking skilled volunteer help in tight economic times, the deep skill pool represented by today's boomers represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

"For some non-profit organizations, this is a whole new area," said Taylor, who will head a one-day workshop on the subject next month at Bryn Mawr College. "It's about developing compelling opportunities, a balance between the organization's needs and the individual's needs."
Dr. Taylor's workshop is entitled "Leveraging Leadership Through Life Experience: Capturing the Expertise of People 50+." Topics will include crafting compelling opportunities that will attract older volunteers, and techniques for tapping those with advanced skills. [read more] |

| Workshop: Emerging From a Recession: Practical Financial Tools For Nonprofit Leaders
| |
The Nonprofit Finance Fund is offering a two-day Financial Leadership Clinic for up to six qualifying Children, Youth, and Families organizations. Thanks to generous support from The William Penn Foundation, there will be no cost to participating organizations.
Through this clinic, NFF aims to empower nonprofit leaders and board members to gain a deeper understanding of financial documents and their own financial position; identify and communicate financial goals within the context of the changing economic environment; make more informed decisions regarding its financial situation by beginning to develop sound financial decision-making tools; and communicate key financial challenges and opportunities effectively to stakeholders.
