March 8th Open House for International Women's Day

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace. Following the United Nations' lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women's Day (IWD).

Each year at this time, Canadians celebrate progress towards equality for women and their full participation, reflect on the challenges and barriers that remain, and consider future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.

For the second year, WRRC will hold an Open House on March 8th.  We encourge you to come by for a tour, see and hear about the activities at WRRC, meet the staff and learn how you can become involved.  Everyone is welcome (yes, that includes men!)  WRRC Exterier

Hope to see you on the 8th!

Volunteers - Making things happen!

If rolling stones gather no moss, the same could be said of the WRRC volunteers. Long gone are the days of the bored housewife looking for ways to fill her day. (If in fact that ever truly existed.) More likely our volunteers are juggling family life, work, possibly school and often other volunteer commitments. Even so, they are still willing to give us three of four hours a week, and you can believe that those are committed hours. One such volunteer is Cheryl Wituik.

Since beginning her volunteer experience here in the fall, Cheryl has assisted staff in the shelter. Mostly these duties are not unlike what you might find in any residence - cleaning the kitchen, tidying the linen closet or cooking up a batch of applesauce from donated apples. However, as time goes on and the women become used to her, it also provides opportunities for a quiet conversation for someone needing an available ear. In whatever capacity Cheryl is asked to serve, she is, like the other volunteers who assist us, a visible sign that the bigger world is in fact not as lonely or harsh as what may have brought our client to us.

We count ourselves fortunate to have the calibre of volunteer who come to us looking to build community. If you are interested in learning more about the opportunities available, please contact Frances at 519-246-1526 ext. 239 or francesh@wrrcsa.org

Her story...

Nina came to WRRC several years ago when she identified that her partner was too verbally abusive to be healthy for her or her 2 young girls. She began seeing a Counselor who helped her address the abuse and support her decision to leave partner. While in this process Nina started working with a Transition Advocate who helped her file separation papers, look for new housing and secure financial supports. During this time Nina made safety plans with both her counselor and her Transition Advocate to help keep her and the girls safe. Her girls had started acting out in school. They began repeating some of the bad language dad was using when they were in the school environment. Teachers expressed concern and Nina asked for her daughters to have an intake with the Children's Program at WRRC where they were able to have their own counseling.

With some help from family Nina was able to purchase a small house. Although she found that she was safer in her home, she found she was still struggling with the day to day because she felt worthless and stupid all the time. Things her abusive partner had told her very often. Financial stability was also an issue for Nina and she found that groceries and bills were often a struggle now that she was a single parent. Her Transition Advocate let Nina know about the food bank at WRRC that she could access whenever she needed. She started seeing a Counselor at WRRC and working on self esteem and standing up for herself. During this time she started to see little things that she is good at that she never gave herself credit for. Nina continues to work on building her self confidence so that she can provide a happy and healthy life for her 2 young girls and herself.

Youth Media Project Contest

Women's Rural Resource centre is looking for media submissions from Middlesex and area youth showcasing the theme of "Healthy Relationships". There are great prizes to be won including a Playbook, Camera and HD monitor!

We challenge youth to get creative! Show us your slant on healthy relationships.

All types of media submissions are welcomed. All submissions will be posted on our Facebook page, and a winner will be announced in June.

"Youth in this generation are born with a media perspective, what we want to do is to have youth use this powerful tool to impact others to think critically about what healthy relationships mean. We encourage youth to think outside the box and be creative with their plan" says Maly Bun, of Women's Rural Resource Centre. Holy Cross "Be an Angel Campaign" supports WRRC

CFS
some of the many Christmas packages generously donated in support of the women & children served by WRRC

For it is in giving that we receive...

Every year in November staff of Women's Rural Resource Centre are invited to make a presentation to the students of Holy Cross Catholic School to kick off their "Be an Angel Campaign." This campaign gives the students  an opportunity to be angels to the many families in need within our local community.
Through the Be an Angel campaign Holy Cross supports families through the WRRC Christmas Family Sponsorship program. Each home room class  takes on a family, they do this by raising funds as a class and then purchasing gifts based on their family's wish list. Holy Cross has been instrumental in ensuring that all families seeking support through our program receive a Christmas package. They have been sponsors for over 8 years and in this time have supported over 125 families.

Our Christmas family sponsorship program has been active for over 10 years and has grown considerably in that time. This program brings home the spirit of Christmas, not only to the families who receive the gifts but also to those who are able to sponsor them. Thank you to the 36 sponsors who provided gifts to 75 families...75 moms and 140 very happy children!

On December 2nd, over 100 male students and teachers of Holy Cross also took on the challenge "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" by walking the halls in red pumps. Pledges were collected from fellow students, friends and families and a donation of $486.95 was also made as part of the "Be an Angel Campaign."
