Membership Update

Earlier this year we made renewing your membership online much easier. The number of screens you have to click through is reduced, and we made the instructions clear and concise. As a result of your officers and directors phoning some SAFE members who failed to renew, and talking to many of you at Oshkosh, we learned that additional improvements were needed. Over the past two months we have:

  • Greatly enhanced the information we provide to new members. Now new members are specifically told the next steps after joining to get the most from their SAFE membership. You can see what we now tell new members, and learn how to maximize your own SAFE benefits, by going to http://www.safepilots.org/members-only/new-member-information/ (login required).
  • Because logging into the SAFE website is required for membership renewal the renewal notices now include the member's username, and the link for lost password is provided. (For security reasons the system cannot play back a member's password.)
  • Now you can put your SAFE membership on autopilot. When you go to the renewal screen on the website you will be given the option to have your membership automatically renewed each year when it comes up. You can also sign up for automatic renewal anytime by clicking on Sign Up for Auto-Renewal in the yellow box on the right side of virtually every page on the SAFE website. Many members asked for automatic renewal; now it's a reality.
  • We learned that our members are busy, and sometimes they don't have time to renew when they first receive a notice. Then perhaps they forget and it doesn't get done. We had been sending a total of 3 renewal notices, starting at 4 weeks before expiration. We are now sending the first notice at 6-weeks prior, and follow up about every 2 weeks (up to 5 notices) if renewal is not accomplished. Once renewed, the notices stop, and there is an option, included in the 3rd notice, for those few who do not wish to renew to opt out and stop the notices.

We listen to our members and do our best to provide what they want and need. Thanks for being a SAFE member.

SAFE Members Asked to Help with Doctoral Research Project

Kristi Dunks, a SAFE member and doctoral candidate at Texas Tech University, is researching general aviation accident reports released by the NTSB and the retellings of those events through outside sources such as user groups and aviation interest groups. In order to understand how official accident reports and retellings are used, a survey has been developed. The survey will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete and can be accessed at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2TNY9H8
REMINDER -- SAFE at AOPA Summit

In just a few days it will be hard to miss SAFE at this year's AOPA Summit in Palm Springs, CA, October 11-13!

SAFE is partnering with the AOPA Air Safety Institute to offer the simulator training portion of our Pilot Proficiency Project™. As we did at AirVenture, SAFE instructors will provide training in the Redbird FMX simulator, using the same 11 scenarios created specifically for improving pilot proficiency during AirVenture.  Additionally, we've improved our training by providing pilots with the opportunity to fly the FMX with a "legacy" six-pack instrument setup for those unfamiliar with glass panels.

As seminars are a key part of major aviation events, and wherever top-notch presenters are scheduled, you'll find SAFE members. AOPA Summit in Palm Springs will be no different. For example, SAFE members will lead 20 of the 26 scheduled CFI Roundtables, and at least fourteen members will present other Summit seminars. See http://www.aopa.org/summit/
