Volunteer to assist SAFE during AirVenture
What you can do for your Organization
We are still in need of a few experienced RedBird FMX simulator instructors to assist in running the Pilot Proficiency Project. If you have some experience, and the willingness to share that experience, in helping pilots improve their proficiency during Air Venture, please let us know!
We can also still use some help staffing the SAFE Tent during AirVenture. SAFE has been working hard for its members; its now time for more members to step up and ask, "What can I do to help my organization?" Volunteer today!
In appreciation to all those folks who volunteer during AirVenture we will be holding a special Bar-B-Que dinner for them on Friday evening. We've also purchased SAFE embroidered, white pilot shirts with pockets for all volunteers

Safe Represented at NTSB Safety Forum
SAFE Executive Director Doug Stewart and SAFE Charter Member Robert Wright represented SAFE at the NTSB General Aviation Safety Forum held recently in Washington, DC. The goals of the forum were to raise awareness of the GA accident rate and associated recurring safety issue areas, promote and facilitate dialogue about these issues, and determine how to effectively address these issues to improve the safety of GA operations in the future.
Eight different panels offered presentations to the NTSB, with questions and comments from the Board following each panel's presentations. Presentations covered a wide spectrum of topics including: Safety Priorities; Safety Programs; The Role of The Flight Instructor; Content, Quality and Consistency of Pilot Training; and more. Doug addressed the topic of "Preparing CFIs to Teach" and Bob spoke about "Risk Management Training: The Key to Avoiding Fatal Accidents". Their presentations, along with the rest of the entire two day event can be viewed here.

SAFE Responds to AFS810 Request
SAFE has responded to the request of Mr. James Viola, manager of AFS810, to comment on any CFI or CFII legal interpretation or CFR specific rule that SAFE feels has grown and gone down the wrong road over the last 20 years that we would like to either: 1. go back to an old rule (earlier time); or 2. make adjustments to the current rule. A list of 21 comments were submitted covering topics including: Flight Reviews; Experimental and Amateur Built Aircraft; Flight Instructor Renewal; Recency of Experience; Mandatory Occurrence Reports; FIRCs; Flight Instructor Records; X/C Requirements; Inspections; General Definitions; Medical Certificates; and more.

Testing and Training ARC Issues Report
The Airman Testing Standards and Training Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) released its report including nine recommendations aimed at aligning skills and knowledge and the correlation of training and testing. The FAA was receptive to the majority of the report and committed to improving the testing and training standards by working hand in hand with industry stakeholders. It will probably take from 3 to 5 years before all the recommendations get implemented, and SAFE is fully committed to being a part of that process.

Updated AC for BFR & IPC, plus New Appendix to Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
From FAASafety.gov
The FAA want's to bring to our attention the availability of two new resources for pilots and instructors.
A new chapter has been added to the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) - Runway Incursion Avoidance. The FAA "strongly urges" CFIs to thoroughly know the contents of the new chapter. They are also encouraging the use of the recently revised AC 61.98B, Currency Requirements and Guidance for the Flight Review and Instrument Proficiency Check. Click here for the AC
