April 2012

SAFE represents nearly 700 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE is also leading the Pilot Training Reform Initiative.

RECAP: Sun-N-Fun 2012!
SAFE at Sun-N-Fun March 27 - April 1, 2012

Beautiful weather, with the exception of just one storm passing through on Saturday, made for a great week of upbeat enthusiasm at Sun-N-Fun this year. That certainly was the mood at the SAFE tent, ably manned by: Directors Mark Adams, Alan Davis, Cliff Chetwin, Donna Wilt and Larry Bothe along with SAFE members; Bill Ervin, Jack Vandeventer, Dennis Wilt, Bill Castlen, Gordon Penner, Rich Funcheon, Jeffrey Moss, John Mahany and Chuck Ebbeke.

All the many new and renewing members who joined during Sun N Fun were able to take advantage of almost $200 worth of "benefits", available only during the fly-in, which were provided by: Sporty's; Gold Seal Systems; Gleim and ASA.  Thanks also go to Jim Alsip, who provided copies of his new book "Flying the Tailwheel Airplane", allowing us to sell it at a significant discount, as well as donating a portion of the proceeds to SAFE.

The annual breakfast sponsored by Redbird Flight Simulations, Starr Aviation, and Aviation Insurance Resources, attended by more than 75 people, was a huge success. Special invited guests included representatives from the FAA, the NTSB, AOPA, EAA, as well as many other industry leaders.  Speakers included: NTSB Board member Dr. Earl Weener; AFS 800 manager Mel Cintron; AOPA COO Rob Moran; Orbital Commerce Project President George Tyson; Wings Outreach Manager Bryan Neville; and NAFI Board member Ted Stevens.

During the breakfast SAFE Executive Director Doug Stewart announced several new and exciting initiatives:

  1. In cooperation with EAA and NAFI, SAFE will be leading a Pilot Proficiency Center to be housed in the Learn To Fly Center during AirVenture. Along with four daily seminars centered on pilot proficiency issues, specially trained SAFE instructors will use a Redbird FMX simulator and Redbird Crosswind Trainer to provide training utilizing scenarios created specifically for this project.
  2. SAFE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Orbital Commerce Project (OCP).  The main focus of the MOU is for the purpose of developing materials, resources and accreditation for spaceflight educators. OCP will be training the instructors who will be training the pilots who will be flying sub-orbital commercial space flights. George Neild,  Associate Administrator of the FAA AST (Office of Commercial Space Transportation) stated he expects space tourism to begin within the next two years and grow into a billion dollar industry. Thus the timing of this MOU is excellent.
  3. Thanks to the efforts of SAFE member Jack Vandeventer, now SAFE members can purchase ANY item available in the Lands' End Company Store with SAFE logo embroidery. (More information on this in a separate article below.)

All in all it was a great event!  Thanks to all who volunteered to make this happen, and to all of you you visited with us at the show.  We are looking forward to seeing you again in a few months at Oshkosh!

"Little Witch" Fundraiser Winner Selected!
Stallion 51's Lee Lauderback (L) holds up the winning ticket besides SAFE's Doug Stewart (r).
Lee Sauderback (l) holds up winning ticket with Doug Stewart (r).
Winner hails from Alberta, Canada

On Saturday, March 31st, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) held the drawing for a flight in Stallion 51's P-51TF, "The LITTLE Witch." Standing beside the airplane at Sun-n-Fun, Stallion 51 Owner and Chief Pilot Lee Lauderback randomly drew the winning ticket from a bin of more than 1,000 tickets.

SAFE would like to take this opportunity to offer our very sincere gratitude to Jim Goodwin, owner of The LITTLE Witch, for donating his incredible airplane and helping SAFE raise just under $21,000.00 in our first significant fund-raising effort.

Winner Ronald Vanden Dungen from Alberta, Canada will not only help to create the flight's mission profile, but will also be given the opportunity to do most of the flying. The session will include two hours of pre- and post-flight briefings, plus one hour in the aircraft with a Stallion 51 instructor.

Congratulations to Ronald!

SAFE Board of Directors Complete "Phase One" of Strategic Plan
Building a Framework for the Future

The SAFE Board and the Executive Director, under the guidance of a trained facilitator, has just completed a four month planning process that resulted in completing Phase One of a three year strategic plan for the organization. As a result of this planning process, there were eight key areas that were identified as being central to the continued growth and development of SAFE. These areas included: development and implementation of a marketing and public relations campaign, improving membership recruitment & retention (to include a more streamlined and automated membership system) and enhanced volunteer recognition and rewards for those who generously donate their time to the success of the organization. These areas will require that we enhance some of our current systems as well as develop new ones to meet our growth needs. Of course, none of this can happen without a sound fiscal plan that centers on an on-going fundraising campaign.

Your current Board and Executive Director have been diligently working to build SAFE into a "World Class" aviation educator's organization. With this in mind, the strategic plan would not be complete without addressing the area of succession planning. This applies to your Board of Directors as well as the Executive Director. It is critical for the continued success of SAFE that our next generation of leaders knows and understands the history of the organization and has the necessary passion and vision to carry us into the future.

The next step in the process will involve you the member. This may take the form of serving on any of several key committees that have been identified to carry out portions of the strategic plan. It will also include providing input to several surveys that are planned in order to gain as much insight as possible from each one of you as the strategic plan is implemented. As we move forward I would like to encourage each and every one of you to participate in the success of our organization's strategic plan.

Mark Adams

Chairman of the Board

SAFE Responds to NPRM

NPRM on Pilot Certification and Qualification Requirements for Air Carrier Operations

The SAFE government affairs committee, after soliciting and receiving response from the membership on the draft response to the "Pilot Certification and Qualification Requirements for Air Carrier Operations" NPRM, has sent the draft to the SAFE Board of Directors for final approval. The Board will submit the official response to the FAA before the deadline of April 19th. Every member of SAFE is encouraged to send their own response to the FAA on this important NPRM that could have major impacts on the aviation education community.

New Private and Commercial Practical Test Standards

New PTS will become effective June 1, 2012

All SAFE members are encouraged to review these new standards as they include some significant changes both in the way we test, and the way we prepare applicants for the test. Of particular note is the inclusion of SRM assessment in both tests, similar to what currently exists in the Instrument PTS. There is also stronger language encouraging the DPE to structure the test to incorporate scenarios as much as possible, thus testing more to a level of application and correlation than has previously been done. There is also much greater emphasis on runway incursion knowledge and inclusion of emergency descents in both private and commercial tests.  Plus, the new PTS explicitly states that maintaining altitude in stall recoveries is NOT the objective, but that reduction of AOA is the most important.

SAFE, OCP Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Organizations will Promote Safety in Commercial Human Spaceflight

SAFE recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Orbital Commerce Project (OCP). The purpose of the agreement is "to promote safety in the Commercial Human Spaceflight industry through excellence in training and education." The two organizations will team up on initiatives that include:

  • Working with the Office of Commercial Space Transportation (FAA/AST) to develop the framework for spaceflight educator certification
  • Developing recognized levels of achievement and spaceflight educator proficiency
  • Creating courses and teaching materials to advance spaceflight education
  • Promoting "safety through training" to the Commercial Human Spaceflight Industry
  • Developing unusual attitude and G-tolerance courses

During recent testimony before a U.S. House subcommittee regarding the FY2013 budget for the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation, the Office's Associate Administrator stated that he expects space tourism to begin within the next two years and grow into a billion dollar industry within ten years.

OCP CEO George Tyson commented, "We are excited about working with SAFE. SAFE's mission to provide quality education for Flight Educators will combine and enhance OCP's desire to continually improve and update our training programs." He continued, "This powerful partnership will enhance the skills of the Flight Instructors and therefore increase safety for the flying public."
