SAFE represents more than 500 of the industry's top aviation educators, including numerous local and national General Aviation Award winners in the flight instruction, aviation maintenance, avionics, and FAA Safety Team categories. SAFE is also chairing the Pilot Training Reform Symposium in Atlanta, GA on May 4-5, 2011.

Polling All Members!
Results of Survey on SAFE Member ID Cards

Poll Snapshot

Fifty-nine percent of SAFE members rated the importance of a membership ID card as either irrelevant or not very important; 21 percent were neutral.

Fifty-three percent never or infrequently carry their ID cards with them (44 percent never) versus 38 percent who carry their cards most or all of the time.

Eighty-five percent would find it acceptable to have a membership card emailed that could then be printed and cut out, while 73 percent would be interested in a printable membership certificate.

Thanks to all those who participated in the survey. The SAFE Board will discuss the results and how to proceed during an upcoming teleconference.

SAFE Expands Member Benefits
Discounts Could Add Up to Hundreds of Dollars

In an ongoing effort to expand and improve the benefits available to its membership, SAFE recently added King Schools and ForeFlight to a list of more than two dozen providers of discounts on products and services. Existing benefits providers PilotWorkshops and Sporty's have expanded their offerings to members as well.

King Schools now extends a 20% discount to SAFE members on all King courses, while ForeFlight offers members a 33% discount on annual subscriptions for the iPad and iPhone. In addition to discounts already offered, PilotWorskshops has added a substantial discount on its IFR Mastery Series, and members can now purchase quality apparel embroidered with the SAFE logo directly from Sporty's, with a portion of the embroidery sales donated back to SAFE.

According to SAFE Chair Doug Stewart, "Taking advantage of just a few of our available benefits could save up to ten times the cost of a Regular annual membership." To access these and other benefits, log in to the SAFE website and follow the path Members Only > Member Benefits for promo codes and other information.

SAFE Participates in Several Meetings in January
Active on Joint Steering Committees, at FAA Summit

Report from SAFE Chair Doug Stewart
SAFE member Bob Wright and I recently attended a meeting of the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GA-JSC) in Washington, DC to discuss the restructuring of the GA-JSC as well as the work program for 2011. The new structure will organize the GA-JSC similar to the successful CAST (Commercial Aviation Safety Team) model, which has been very effective at reducing the accident rate in commercial operations. The intent is for the GA-JSC to be more data driven and to focus on areas we believe can provide the greatest return on our investment of time.

The GA-JSC will be organized into three committees: The Steering Committee, which will manage the program; the Safety Analysis Team, which will research the data and create mitigation strategies; and Working Groups, which will deliver the mitigation strategies and disband once a project is completed. SAFE member Jeff Edwards, an acknowledged expert in the field of aviation accident investigation, will represent SAFE on the Safety Analysis Team.

I also represented SAFE at the Light Sport Joint Steering Committee (LS-JSC) meeting held in conjunction with the Light Sport Expo in Sebring, FL. As part of the restructuring of the GA-JSC, the LS-JSC will no longer be a sub-group of the GA-JSC, but will operate under a new charter to be written soon. I then attended an FAA Summit, the purpose of which was to identify fatal accident rates in amateur built (experimental) airplanes and to develop steps to reduce the number of fatal accidents in this segment of general aviation. SAFE volunteered to create a module in the FAA CFI/DPE Forum series to address Instructing in Amateur Built Aircraft.
FAASTeam CFI Workshops to End
Last Module must be Completed by September 30, 2012

According to the FAA, the ability to renew CFI certificate based on attendance at FAASTeam CFI Workshops:

will terminate upon completion of module #8 on September 30, 2012. To be eligible for CFI renewal, participants must complete all 8 modules prior to September 30, 2012. There will be no make up workshops following that date.

To receive credit towards Flight Instructor renewal, a participant may register in advance on FAASafety.gov or may register at the workshop itself by signing the attendance sheet and providing his/her email address used for FAASafety.gov activities. Participants seeking CFI renewal are also required to maintain their attendance records and test answer sheets provided by the attending CFI Workshop Facilitator.

Any questions regarding the FAASTeam CFI Workshop program, can be answered by your local FAASTeam Program Manager.

CFI Workshops should not be confused with the new CFI Forums currently being developed by SAFE for the FAASTeam, two of which have already been deployed.
