It's all about the Marketing! Marketing: what really works? When starting a new business or looking to revamp an old one, there are several marketing basics you need to consider. But where to start?
Here's a short list for your Marketing Plan ...you do have one, right? Remember, you don't have to do everything at once, but prioritize and budget:
· Logo: Brand your business · Business Cards: A very inexpensive form of advertising · Slim Jims: Great as leave behinds and mailers · Brochures: Provides more information than Slim Jims · Pocket Folders: Don't forget to include 'stepped' inserts · Websites: Keep it professional · Search Engine Optimization: Stay on top of search engine results · Social Networking: There's more than just starting a FaceBook page · eNewsletters: An easy and inexpensive way to stay in front of your clients · Direct Mail: This still works · Media Advertising: Newspapers, newsletters, trade magazines, bulletins · Promotional Products: More than just pens, mugs, magnets and t-shirts · Cold Calls: Walk in where no one else has gone - grab new territory · Referrals: No better way to advertise than when a client recommends you
We'll go into detail on the above list in future emails. But remember, for now, take a look at what successful companies are doing in your area. It also doesn't hurt to find out what those failing are doing wrong!

Q&A: You've got questions, we've got answers! AED only...
I was asked to teach an AED only class. I said they'd have to learn CPR as well and they went elsewhere. Should I have taught it even though it goes against my professional opinion?
How can you teach proper AED use without CPR training? Even an AED says, 'If necessary, continue CPR'. We've run into that ourselves and decided that without a current CPR certification, an AED only class would not be held. So what we offer instead? Free CPR/AED training on any AED purchase, for up to 6 students.

Stories from the trenches Professional behavior from EMS
As an EMT with 25 years running 911, experience has helped me teach classes with great anecdotal stories. It also helps me explain to students what they should expect when EMS arrives if they are doing CPR.
They're told that in many cases, there may be just two crew members on the ambulance, so if the crew is smart, they will 'use and abuse' you and ask you to continue CPR while they get all their equipment ready.
Imagine my disgust when I was told how when an ambulance arrived, the layperson was unceremoniously pushed to the side - without even a thank you. I explained that a professional crew (and a smart one) may ask for your help and should thank you.
When we hear from one of our students that they actually had to use the skills we taught, we will present them with a CPR save pin. It makes them feel good about what they did and also encourages us to keep on teaching - the life saved may be someone we love.
