It's all about the Marketing! Have you really monitored your instructors?
We recently learned of an incident where a lead instructor was 'given' assistants - they were assured these instructors knew their stuff!
Well, during the class, when the class was broken up into groups for the hands-on instruction, some of the groups took 3-4 times as long to get through each section. And, while listening in on one of these, the lead heard the assistant re-teaching the section - and it was wrong!
Each of your instructors represents you. How they look, dress, speak, instruct and the content of their course says everything about you and your training center.
Have your monitored every one of your instructors lately?

Q&A: You've got questions, we've got answers! Instructor out of uniform.
How do you handle instructors who don't follow your "dress code"?
First of all, we recommend that you do have a written "dress code" for your instructors and any other employees who represent your company to the public. It would be great if everyone were to where shirts with your logo or that of ECSI - however, we realize that may not be feasible.
What we do recommend is that you establish a color combination (ie - khaki bottoms with a navy blue top) or a list of do nots (ie - no jeans, tank tops or pants or tops that allow midriffs to show). Remember, CPR training is a "down on your knees" type of training and does not allow for high heals, low cut tops or low rise pants to provide a professional image.
Now that you have a dress code, make sure each employee or instructor has a copy and has signed acknowledgment thereof. Be prepared to let them know that if they fail to comply, they will not be able to represent your company.
Also remember that a unique training situation - outside on a farm, etc. may require temporary adjustments to your dress code.
Got question about teaching? Or maybe how to handle a specific situation during class? Email them to us us. If we use your question, we'll send you a free stock T-shirt!^Back to top |
Stories from the trenches Is there such a thing as a "dumb" question?
We heard recently from a training center about a question that raised some eyebrows in the class.....
It was a large class, so holding the attention of everyone was quite a challenge. In addition, the average age was 15. The instructor had gone through the video, discussed the use of an AED and how electricity works within the body. The students then used the AED on the manikins. Now for any questions.
One student asked us to reiterate that, with the 2010 new regulations, AED's could be used on infants. Yes. Then she went on to confirm that if there were no pediatric pads, that adult pads could be used in that situation - again, affirmative. Now the shocker, the next question..."So, do I only use the one adult pad on the infant so that the shock is less?????"
Oops, somewhere the message didn't get through. There were smiles in the audience, but rather than discourage this avid student, it gave the instructor a quick chance to review that section of the training. I'm sure no one in the class will forget the correct use of an AED should they ever need to use it.
Do you have a real-life story or an anecdote you'd like to share? Email them to us. If we use it, you'll receive 500 Business Cards free of charge!^Back to top |
