A NOTE FROM THE DOCTORS
Hello my name is Aleksander Poderski. Most people know me by my nickname, Bucky. I am a boy scout in Troop 811. My current rank is Life. I am working on advancing to the rank of Eagle. Part of advancing is having completed an Eagle Scout project. This is a leadership service project that is intended to help a non-profit community organization. I have chosen Domino's House as the location for my project and I plan to build an outside enclosure for one of the cat cottages. This enclosure is to allow the cats some freedom to explore the outdoors but keeps them safe at the same time. Domino's House is excited for this enclosure to be built. The approximate cost to build the enclosure is $1000.00. I am actively trying to raise funds to create the enclosure. I would be very appreciative of your help. I will have a jar at the reception desk at my parent's hospital where contributions can be made. Alternatively a check could be mailed and made out to me, Aleksander Poderski, and in the memo box please put that it is for the Eagle project. The Martin Downs Animal Hospital address will work (1625 SW Martin Hwy Palm City FL 34990). Below you will see a photo of the area where we want to build the enclosure and a finished enclosure. Please help me improve the quality of these cats' lives and help Domino's House.
Thank you,

This is Ollie, an 11 year old Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie). Ollie presented to the medical side with some skin problems. The doctor recommended giving Ollie medicated baths and a groom so his skin can be seen through the thick hair coat. Ollie's owners did as the doctors recommended and Ollie came in for a medicated hydrosurge bath and Cathy groomed his hair beautifully.

FALL TOXINS
The start of Fall brings new seasonal household items that pose a threat to the safety of our pets. These common household items can cause serious problems if ingested by animals. PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
Comfortis Now For Cats and Small Dogs
Comfortis, the month-long flavored tablet that has been protecting dogs from fleas since 2007 has now been approved by the FDA for use in cats and smaller dogs. It can be used in cats and kittens greater than 2 lbs and 14 weeks and older. In addition, they have a new 90mg tablet that will allow you to get the same great flea protection for smaller dogs 3.3-4.9 lbs and 14 weeks and older. We have had a few staff members using Comfortis for their cats for flea outbreaks and it worked wonders! They haven't had any problems since they started using Comfortis.
FYI--Comfortis:
- Starts killing fleas in 30 minutes
- Kills fleas before they lay eggs
- Provides protection for a full month
- Can't be groomed, washed, or rubbed off
If you have any questions about Comfortis, be sure to ask us! Frontline Tritak There is a new and improved Frontline on the market called 'Frontline Tritak.' It uses a unique and patented combination of ingredients to provide a faster speed of kill for live fleas. The triple action formula adds a small dose of cyphenothrin to the proven Frontline Plus combination of fipronil and (s)-methoprene to kill fleas fast, so they have less time to bite. FYI--Frontline Tritak: - Starts killing fleas in as little as 1 hour
- Kills fleas, flea eggs, and flea larva
- It starts strong, and stays strong all month long
- Works for ticks too, just like Frontline Plus but starts killing them within 1 hour
Once again, if you have any questions about any of our products let us know, we'd be glad to answer them for you!!!

CASE OF THE MONTH
This is a story where an owners' love extends life, a quality life, against statistical limited time survivability.
Simon is a 12 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, who has been a patient of ours since 2004. He has been in good health and always well taken care of by his parents. In July, he started limping on his right rear leg. Pain medication helped but did not resolve it. Simon displayed the symptoms of a partial rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee. He was scheduled for surgery to repair it, however; upon taking x-rays of his leg, we discovered a lesion on the femur just above the knee. The changes were consistent with osteosarcoma (OS), a malignant tumor of the bone. The ACL surgery was cancelled. We discussed with the owners several options: how to secure a definite diagnosis, about treatments, prognosis, alternatives, quality of life, and even euthanasia. There was never any hesitation on the part of the owner as to what they wanted to do. The primary objective was to get rid of the tumor and his pain, and re-establish Simon's quality of life. To do that we needed to amputate his leg. The long term prognosis was limited and statistically amputation is not a cure. The owner made an informative decision and decided to have the leg removed. Considering the alternative, euthanasia, or living in pain until euthanasia, it was the right one.
The next day I amputated Simon's leg and the following day he went home. He is walking / running on his 3 legs, his appetite is great, and he has had no problems going to the bathroom. He is like a new dog. The histopathology exam of the tumor confirmed that it was OS. We signed Simon up with a Cancer Care Clinic where he attends chemotherapy treatments every 3 weeks.
It is now 2 months after the surgery and Simon is still full of life. Just look at his pictures!! Good for you, Simon. You are one lucky puppy to have parents with love in their hearts as much as yours. I am just humbled to be a part of your health providing team.
Sincerely,
Dr. P.
