CAT ISSUE
Cats are just as loved as dogs and yet they are much less likely to come in for a check up...even though they get sick just as often as dogs do. Cats are just better at hiding their sickness. By the time we see them, they often have serious problems that could have been avoided if we had a chance to check them out earlier. The most common problems we find with cats are: kidney failure, diabetes, thyroid problems, high blood pressure, Feline AIDS, leukemia and tumors.
It's very important to be pro-active with your cat's health. Do not procrastinate. If you have a cat who has not been checked within the last year, now's the time to act. We are currently offering a 20% discount on all Feline Services as part of our 2-Month Long DediCATion. Bring your cat(s) in anytime during September or October to take advantage of this special offer for our feline friends.
We look forward to providing the same excellent care for your cat(s) as we do for your dog(s). Thank you so much for entrusting us with the care of your wonderful family members.
See you in the exam room, Drs. Poderski, Waters, and Jolin

A NOTE FROM THE DOCTORS
LOCAL COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING August 2012-Cadet Karolina Poderski, daughter of Drs. Karol & Robin Poderski of Palm City, FL, completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy.
Poderski entered West Point on July 2 and has successfully completed six weeks of Cadet Basic Training. Also referred to as "Beast Barracks," CBT is one of the most challenging events a cadet will encounter over the course of their four years at the academy. The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence, and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction included first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship, and nuclear, biological and chemical training.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
Leptospirosis Vaccine
In light of our wet season and recent downpours, Martin Downs Animal Hospital has decided to offer the Leptospirosis vaccine as an optional vaccination for dogs.
Leptospirosis is a spirochete. This organism can be found in warm, wet environments where there can be stagnant or slow moving water that has been contaminated with animal urine. Reservoir hosts for leptospirosis are rats, mice, raccoons, horses, marsupials, cows, pigs and dogs. Humans can also contract this bacteria. It is spread through indirect contamination from urine in standing water or directly from bite wounds or by ingesting infected animal tissue.
The targeted affected organs are the kidneys and liver. Symptoms can range in severity but typically the dog will experience vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, fever, anorexia as well as some bleeding disorders. Prevention is possible by vaccination as well as avoiding areas of stagnant water. The vaccine is given as a series of two vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart and after that given annually. Leptospirosis is commonly given as a stand-alone vaccine and not mixed with other immunizations. Martin Downs Animal Hospital is offering this vaccine as an outpatient visit at a cost of $19.97.
For more information regarding this vaccine, call us at 772-288-3456.
