A NOTE FROM THE DOCTORS
It is a sad month for us here at Martin Downs Animal Hospital. Two of our long term technicians, Mary and Vanessa, will be departing to take on different careers.

Vanessa will be following her dream of becoming a math teacher.  August 2nd will be her final day here. She will be helping us out occasionally so you still may see her.

Mary will be pursuing a career in surgical technology in human medicine and her last day will be August 17th.

You will be seeing some new faces as we train new technicians to take over their positions.

Back To School

It's that time again!  Your children are going back to school... but what about your pets? If your pets are lonely now that the kids are gone, have no fear, Martin Downs Animal Hospital is here to save the day!  Our resort has the best doggie day care in the area. You can drop your pet off in the morning on your way to work and pick up in the afternoon when you return home.  Our hours are 7 am until 5:30-6 pm depending on the day.  If you want your pet to have playtime with others but don't want to leave them for too long, you can do just a half day. While your pets are here boarding, they will get to interact with other campers and our wonderful resort staff. You can rest assured that they will have a good time and will not be missing you instead of sitting home alone.

Client Testimonial
Hi Dr. Waters,
Daisy May passed her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) exam (on her first try). I PROMISE YOU this could "not" have been done without you guys (MDAH and staff). She was only the 2nd dog to pass so far that day... after 9 (I believe) canines being tested and only 1 left to go... I was there, our wild and crazy Daisy truly passed the rigorous exam! They tested her reaction to another dog and her distraction from another dog, walking through crowds, distractions and loud noise, supervised separation, accepting friendly strangers, witnessing unfriendly strangers without panic or aggression, her appearance, grooming her, and touching and examining her ears, paws, teeth, and tail... etc., etc., etc. THANK YOU MARTIN DOWNS ANIMAL HOSPITAL AND STAFF including RESORT: DAYCARE, BOARDING, and GROOMING!!!!!!!!!! We only struggled a bit on "loose leash." Go figure, her leash gets to come off the moment she hits your doors! Lol. With Daisy's amazing socialization skills I am convinced MDAH also has a "school" in the back for dogs!!! Thank you so much for helping us and always taking such good care of our Daisy!! We want to express our gratitude to your staff, and have been wanting to even before she became a "certified pet therapist." By the way, Carolyn gave my friends an amazing tour yesterday. Carolyn was so sweet and wonderful! She knew all of the personalities of the dogs, and has Daisy May pegged to a tee!! It was really funny and we all had a great time on our tour... with Daisy and Oliver leading us on the way!! Daisy even ran circles in the yard for us... as if she were trying to give us a better idea of the place or was just showing off her wonderland! Thank you Dr. Waters!!
Daisy, Lisa and Roy Bruton

Puppies Galore!!!
Our Head Groomer, Cathy, breeds Labrador Retriever puppies. She brings them to Martin Downs Animal Hospital for Dr. Poderski to examine and give vaccinations before they are sold. Cathy's puppies come from Champion bloodlines and several of our clients own them.  If you would like more information about her puppies, you can come in and talk with her or go to her website: www.spiritoaklabs.com.

Chambers New Member Reception
The Palm City Chamber of Commerce held a New Member Reception on July 17th. Martin Downs Animal Hospital was a proud co-sponsor along with Seacoast National Bank. Chris, our practice manager, represented the animal hospital at the event.

Domino's House Project

July 24-26 were 3 busy days... but not here at the animal hospital. Dr. Waters  and Vanessa were at Domino's House, a cat rescue shelter in Palm City.

While there, they did examinations, updated vaccines, tested cats for Leukemia and Feline Aids and helped them with any other problems that may have arisen. Throughout the 3 days, only 12 hours worth of work, they looked at over 110
cats.

If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten please go to the Domino's House website and have a look at the cats up for adoption, there are plenty to choose from!! www.dominoshouse.org
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Shannon, our newest vet assistant, is our employee spotlight this month. She has lived in Florida all her life and is the mom of 2 German Shepherds, Iko and Oona. She has always had a love for all animals. She managed a cutting horse farm in Ocala, amongst many other jobs. As she transitioned out of the large animal industry, she started working at a small animal clinic, where she worked for many years. She currently is here at MDAH and hopes to further her knowledge in small animal care.

BOARDER OF THE MONTH
Molly is our August pick for Boarder of the
Month. She is a cute 5 year old Shepherd Mix.
She stays comfortable here at our pet resort and
gets to play with our many other resort guests.

We would also like to remind you that you can
receive text messages, picture texts and emails
from our Resort Staff while your precious pets are
visiting with us. Make sure to ask when dropping
off your pet! Our  Resort phone number is
772-486-4473 if  you would like to send and
receive pictures and texts, or you can email us at
 boarding@vet4yourpet.net
.  If you have any
questions about our Resort after hours or on
weekends, please utilize the resort phone number.
GROOM OF MONTH
This is Mojo, a beautiful 3 year old Himylayan cat. Mojo comes to our spa every 3 months to get groomed by Cathy. But for Mojo, grooming does not always consist of a hair cut. He gets a hydrosurge bath and a brush out, along with a nail trim. By Mojo coming in so often for the brush outs, we are able to preserve his luscious long hair that Himylayans are known for and we don't have to shave him.

ADOPTION CORNER

Domino's House
Hi there, I'm River, a 2 1/2 month old male kitten and I'm absolutely adorable, or so I've been told. I was found by a river when I was very young. I was all by myself and scared and hungry. What a relief when a nice couple found me and brought me to Domino's House. Here we all have food and fun and we're all safe. But there is something missing in my life - a loving home. I want to have my own "special" family, one that will love me and I can love forever. I promise to give you lots of purrs, laughs and most of all, love. Just adopt me, please.

Urban Tails

Cowboy has a unique story in that he was found in an apartment after his owner died in a car accident. He was passed around to a few foster homes and currently resides at Urban Tails. If you are interested in adopting him please contact Tracey Zack at 786-402-7794.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
Where have all the cats gone?? Do you think it's a hassle to bring your kitty to the vet? Do you struggle getting them into their carrier? We have some tips and a video that can help you with that feat!! We will highlight the key points but watch the video, put out by the CATalyst Council, for more specific details... Cats & Carriers: Friends Not Foes Video.
  1. Choose the best type of carrier
    • A sturdy, secure, stable, easy to carry and quiet carrier is best. One with a removable top and that opens from the top and side is most ideal.
  2. Choose the best location for training your cat to the carrier
    • Put the carrier in a place the cat likes to visit that is convenient for you and your cat.
  3. Make the carrier cat friendly
    • Make it welcoming by leaving the doors open, putting a favorite person's scent inside the carrier, make it warm and snuggly, put their toys inside or play with them around the carrier and praise them or give them treats for going inside on their own.
  4. Help the cat learn to ride in the car
    • Cover the carrier and secure it with a seat belt. Randomly start the car and/or open the garage to get them used to the sounds of traveling. Go on short friendly visits to the vet to help with their fear.
  5. Help the fearful cat
    • If pets are fearful, a new carrier may help or talk to your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication.
CASE OF THE MONTH
Chester came into our hospital to have his teeth cleaned and a tumor removed from his mouth. His teeth were the least of our worries and we thought this would be a routine prophylaxis... we were wrong!

Upon cleaning the teeth, Sherri, our dental technician, found that Chester had a fracture on the lingual side (near the tongue) of his lower molar tooth. She took x-rays of the teeth and Dr. Poderski confirmed that the tooth was fractured and diagnosed the infection at the root.

This is the x-ray of the tooth:

You can see on the right side of the tooth that it is fractured. It should be solid like the rest of the tooth, not the gray color shown.

Also, if you look at the bottom of the roots, there is a gray "pocket" around the bottom.  That is the site of the infection.

It was determined that the tooth should be extracted.

Every dental procedure gets full mouth x-rays. Sometimes we even have pets who come in for a dental procedure and on the exam of the mouth, all the teeth look perfect but after reviewing the x-rays, we notice that there are some changes underneath the gums that we can't see.

This is the image of Chester's tooth before and after being extracted. In the first view you can see the fracture and in the second view, you can see that the tooth is gone and there are sutures where the tooth was.

HURRICANE AWARENESS
June 1st is marked as the beginning of Hurricane Season. Martin Downs Animal Hospital would like you to be aware of the fact that we are a designated Hurricane Shelter for pets. We weathered all three of the most recent hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. We came through without a scratch and are ready for more to come. Be sure you are already prepared for this Hurricane Season! If not, now is the time to take action. Have a check list and go over it with your family to insure everything is covered and you have not forgotten to make arrangements for your pets, should the need to evacuate arise.  We have a special Hurricane Brochure to help guide pet owners to make sure their furry friends are safe. Visit us on our website: www.vet4yourpet.net.

Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in case of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things:
  1. Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch.
  2. Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
  3. Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
  4. Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
  5. Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet). Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
  6. When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.
