BOARDER OF THE MONTH Brutus is an 11 year old Miniature Pinscher who stays in our Resort quite frequently. Brutus is a special guest in that he has diabetes. This disease requires shots of insulin and a very strict diet. The Resort staff receives a list of specific instructions they must follow to insure Brutus stays healthy while here boarding. Since this is also an animal hospital, the technical staff feeds and administers the twice daily injections necessary to keep Brutus in good health while visiting our Resort.
We would also like to remind you that you can receive text messages, picture texts and emails from our Resort Staff while your precious pets are visiting with us. Make sure to ask when dropping off your pet! Our Resort phone number is 772-486-4473 if you would like to send and receive pictures and texts, or you can email us at boarding@vet4yourpet.net. If you have any questions about our Resort after hours or on weekends please utilize the resort phone number.

GROOM OF MONTH
Angie is a very special groom of the month. She was rescued by the kind-hearted people who run the organization Urban Tails. She was scruffy when they got her, so she came to us for a Spa treatment. She received a hydrosurge bath, a pedicure and a professional groom by Cathy. She looked beautiful by the time she left our hospital -- so good, in fact, that she got adopted!!! We were happy to hear that Angie had found a loving home.
If you would like more information about the Urban Tails organization, you can email Tracey at: tzack@urbantails.org.

Domino's House
Hi there, I'm Rosebud, an 8 week old calico kitten. I was found by myself in Palm City and I have to tell you it's scary out there all alone. It's much nicer being in this shelter with other kittens to play with and plenty of food. What would be better yet would be to have my own home with people to love and play and cuddle with. Does your home qualify? If so, come to Domino's House and let's meet and chat.
Urban Tails We are re-featuring Canelo. He is approximately a 2 years old beagle / hound mix. He is neutered, up to date on shots, and ready to be adopted. He is friendly with other dogs and loooves people. He is sooo sweet natured.
This is the same organization that had Angie, featured in the article Groom Of The Month, who was adopted...let's get him adopted too! You can contact Tracey Zack at (786) 402-7794 or email tzack@urbantails.org.

PROGRESSIVE THERAPEUTICS
July... Fireworks, thunderstorms, anxiety!! July may be a fun month for us with the 4th of July and all the celebrations surrounding the holiday, but your pets could be suffering. Thunderstorms are also another major component to a pet's anxiety level during the summer months. We have some solutions...
With its patent-pending design, Thundershirt's gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs if they are anxious, fearful or over-excited. Based on surveys completed by over two thousand customers, over 80% of dogs showed significant improvement in symptoms when using a Thundershirt. Thundershirts are already helping tens of thousands of dogs around the world, and is recommended by thousands of veterinarians and dog trainers.
As for WHY Thundershirt's gentle pressure works to calm a dog, experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. Using pressure to relieve anxiety has been a common practice for years. For example:
- TTouch dog trainers use pressure to address a wide variety of anxieties.
- Veterinarians use pressure to relax cattle when they are administering vaccinations.
- People with autism use pressure to relieve their persistent anxiety.
- Children with certain behavioral problems use pressure shirts and weighted vests to relax and focus.
- Parents use swaddling to calm an inconsolable newborn infant.
Until now, there just hasn't been a well-designed, inexpensive pressure wrap commonly used for dog anxiety. Thundershirt is changing that! Thousands of veterinarians and dog trainers now recommend Thundershirts for their anxiety cases.

ALERT!!! -- KILLER BEES
Two dogs died and their owner was injured in Palm City after being attacked by a swarm of Africanized "Killer" Bees. The woman was walking her two Pugs on 37th Street, between Feroe Street and Cornell Avenue, when they were attacked by the bees. It is thought that the hive was knocked out of a 10-foot tall tree and the bees were mad. They were looking for something that was a threat and the woman and her pets just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, chasing the woman and her dogs about 150 feet.
Africanized bees are sometimes called "killer bees" because of their aggressive defense of their hives. The stings of the bees are not any more painful then the European Honey Bee but the Africanized bees attack in greater numbers, which can cause severe reactions and even death.

HURRICANE AWARENESS
June 1st is marked as the beginning of Hurricane Season. Martin Downs Animal Hospital would like you to be aware of the fact that we are a designated Hurricane Shelter for pets. We weathered all three of the most recent hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. We came through without a scratch and are ready for more to come. Be sure you are already prepared for this Hurricane Season! If not, now is the time to take action. Have a check list and go over it with your family to insure everything is covered and you have not forgotten to make arrangements for your pets, should the need to evacuate arise. We have a special Hurricane Brochure to help guide pet owners to make sure their furry friends are safe. Visit us on our website: www.vet4yourpet.net.
Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in case of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things: - Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch.
- Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
- Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
- Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
- Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet). Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
- When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.
