West Point Golf Tournament Martin Downs Animal Hospital was a proud sponsor for the 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament: Caring For Cadets. We also submitted a basket for their silent auction. This was an event put on by the West Point Parents Club and the West Point Society of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

NASCAR Truck Racing Sponsor Martin Downs Animal Hospital had a different type of advertising this month. We were featured on Bryan Silas' NASCAR Camping World Truck Series vehicle. He was sporting our logo on the hood of his truck on Friday, May 18th during the race. Here's what driver Bryan Silas had to say, "We're extremely appreciative of the support from Martin Downs Animal Hospital and all of their staff. It's nice to have some local (home) support leaping aboard to help continue to make our transition to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series a positive one. I'm hoping to give them a good showing on Friday night." To read the full please click on the link... http://www.bryansilasracing.com/
Pet Poison Helpline Phone AppPet Poison Helpline now offers a handy iPhone application that contains an extensive database of foods, drugs, chemicals and plants commonly found in the home and yard that are poisonous to pets. You can get the app for only $0.99 and it will provide you with: - One-click button to directly call Pet Poison Helpline in an emergency.
- A searchable database of over 250 poisonous plants, foods, medications and household items, all with pictures.
- Descriptions of how specific poisons affect your pet and symptoms to watch for.
- Instructions on what to do if your dog or cat is exposed to a dangerous substance.
- Constant access to poison information - even when you don't have Internet access.
Please note that Pet Poison Help is available to both pet owners and veterinarians. This app provides an easy to use, comprehensive list of potential poisons and what to look for if your pet is poisoned. You will not find in-depth "how to" treatment options or antidotes within the app. Self-treating could be dangerous, even if the toxin exposure is known; therefore, we always recommend seeking out professional veterinary advice to provide the best care and outcome. |

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Our June employee spotlight features Jessica, who works in the Resort and Spa area of our hospital. Since Jessica was just 12 years old, she knew she wanted a career working with animals. She enjoys her time here at Martin Downs Animal Hospital working in the Resort and Spa as a bather and grooming assistant. She also helps care for all the pets in our Resort area. Her passion for animals came from her mother, who has worked in the animal field in various jobs over the years. Jessica is a hard worker and great asset to our hospital.

GROOM OF MONTH
Monty is a 4 month old black and silver Standard Poodle. He came to our Spa for his first puppy haircut. It is very important for puppies to get used to getting their haircut early, especially breeds that will need constant maintenance. The earlier you start the better. This will help your pet learn what to do when they come in for their Spa treatments. If you have any questions about getting your puppy groomed, please give us a call. New clients are always welcome.

Domino's House I'm Abigail, an 8-week-old tiger stripe kitten. The people here named me after a president's wife. Do you think that means I'll go on to do great things? If great things include playing and cuddling and loving, then I think I will. Those are my favorite things to do and I'd like to do them with you. Are you willing? For more information, call Domino's House, a no-kill, no-declaw, cageless cat/kitten shelter in Palm City, at 772-781-5592. FOOD RECALL
As many of you may know, there has been a pet food recall on Diamond Pet Foods. There was a Salmonella outbreak in one of their plants that left 14 people sick in nine states. Pet foods recalled under the Diamond name include:
- Country Value
 - Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover's Soul
- Diamond
 - Diamond Naturals
 - Premium Edge
- Professional
- 4Health
- Taste of the Wild brands
Some companies that co-manufacture with Diamond Pet Foods have also pulled their products, including:
- Natural Balance
- Solid Gold
- Kirkland Signature / Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain
- Apex Pet Foods
- Canidae Pet Food
- and one type of Wellness Complete Health Puppy Food
The companies claim it is a preccaution because no pet or human illnesses have been reported in association with these brands nor has sample testing shown that any of the bags have Salmonella.
Pets with Salmonella infections can experience similar symptoms to infected humans (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain / colic, diarrhea). They may also be lethargic and not want to eat.
If symptoms are noticed then contact your veterinarian. |

CARING CLIENTS
We received one of the nicest letters from a pair of our clients thanking everyone for all the care that our staff provided their pets. Unfortunately Koko, their last pet passed away. We miss him very much. Here is the letter they wrote us, and with their permission, we would like to share it with you:

MICROCHIPPING REALLY WORKS
Recently, one of our clients brought in a cat she found. She wanted to adopt the cat but before we could allow that to happen, due to it being a stray, we scanned it for a microchip. To our surprise, it did have a microchip. We called the microchip manufacturer and they pointed us in the right direction to find the owner. The owners of the cat claimed they had lost their precious pet 2 days prior and had been searching ever since.
It is always nice to have a microchip story to share. If you are in doubt whether you should chip your pet or not, the answer should always be "yes"! You can't go wrong by getting one and they are non-invasive to the pet. If you think, "my pet never leaves my side"; "never goes out doors"; "it will never happen to me"; you may be wrong. You never know what may happen in the future and a microchip may reunite you with your lost fur baby.

HURRICANE AWARENESS
June 1st is marked as the beginning of Hurricane Season. Martin Downs Animal Hospital would like you to be aware of the fact that we are a designated Hurricane Shelter for pets. We weathered all three of the most recent hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. We came through without a scratch and are ready for more to come. Be sure you are already prepared for this Hurricane Season! If not, now is the time to take action. Have a check list and go over it with your family to insure everything is covered and you have not forgotten to make arrangements for your pets, should the need to evacuate arise. We have a special Hurricane Brochure to help guide pet owners to make sure their furry friends are safe. Visit us on our website: www.vet4yourpet.net.
Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in the time of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things: - Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch.
- Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
- Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
- Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
- Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet). Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
- When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.
