HOSPITAL UPDATES / SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Anesthesia-Free Dental Day

This month Pet Dental Services will be here on April 12th to perform the anesthesia-free dentals. If you would like to know if your pet is a candidate, please call us and schedule an appointment.

The Big Taste

Martin Downs Animal Hospital was a dessert sponsor for this year's The Big Taste, which benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. The Big Taste was held on March 20th at the Evergreen Club in Palm City. Thank you to those who stopped by to visit our table.

Thanks to the generosity and support, the 16th Annual Big Taste and Tournament raised an estimated $85,000!

Chambers New Member Reception

The Palm City Chamber of Commerce held a New Member Reception in January at Seacoast National Bank along with Martin Downs Animal Hospital as their co-sponsor for the reception.  Chris Woolard, Practice Manager, represented the animal hospital at the event.

Baskets
Martin Downs Animal Hospital has recently donated several gift baskets to different charity events in our community. The most recent have been to Domino's House for their Catsablanca Fashion Show, The Fur Seasons Mutt Derby and the Alzheimer's Community Care luncheon. In the baskets we have some hospital information, special treats for you and your pet and a gift certificate.  The gift certificates are for boarding in our luxury suites or deluxe cat condos with a complimentary groom or bath and also one for shadowing a veterinarian for a day. The baskets are usually auctioned off during these charity events, so if you are interested in them keep yours eyes peeled.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Nicole has been helping out in the medical area and in the Resort / Spa area of Martin Downs Animal Hospital for the past 3 1/2 years.  She has a full time job during the week but helps at the hospital on weekends and holidays or whenever possible. For a few years after college, Nicole was a full time Veterinary Technician in the Boston area but had to give it up when she got a job in her field of Environmental Science. She still misses working full time in Veterinary Care and appreciates the opportunity she has with MDAH to care for pets. Nicole believes that continuing to work with the amazing staff at MDAH makes her a better pet owner to her six pets.

Nicole has 2 dogs and 4 cats - all rescues. She is also currently fostering a kitten that was featured in a previous newsletter and is still looking for a forever home for her.

Ajax usually spends his time on the medical side where he feels more comfortable.

If you feel your pet needs special attention while boarding, please let us know. We have several different packages from which to choose.
GROOM OF MONTH
Sassy is a 9 year old Golden Retreiver who frequents our Spa once a month. ADOPTION CORNER
DOMINO'S HOUSE - Yuki
Hello, dear reader, I'm Yuki, which means snow in Japanese. I'm at Domino's House because my "owner" moved out of our home and left me behind. I just don't understand how someone can do this to a cat that gave them all their love and affection. It's as if I'm a piece of trash. Fortunately a neighbor fed me for a while but brought me to this shelter because she couldn't keep me. I'm a sweet and loving cat. Please adopt me and let me show you what a love I am.

For more information, call Domino's House, a no-kill, no-declaw, cageless cat/kitten shelter in Palm City, at 772-781-5592. Visit the website: www.dominoshouse.org to see all the available cats and kittens.

URBAN TAILS Conchita
I am a rescue dog that has been trained through "Urban Tails," a program that allows at risk youth to rehabilitate themselves through the rehabilitation of dogs like me! I am really overdue to be adopted and am afraid I may live out the rest of my life in a shelter. I am a 6 -7 year old, spayed female Elk Hound mix. I am up to date with my shots. I walk great on a leash. I love to offer up my belly for belly rubs, and I  just LOVE people!  Wherever you are, that's where I want to be. Before Urban Tails, I lived in a no kill shelter for 3 years and was past by every time.  I really want a home... this shelter life is no fun.

Call Tracey at (786)402-7794 or email tzack@urbantails.org.
PROGRESSIVE THERAPEUTICS
Does your dog suffer from ear problems? Do you have trouble administering medications or hate the greasy residue left behind? We could have a solution.

Easotic is a new ear medication designed with you, the owners, in mind. Easotic has a flexible nozzle which is gentle on sensitive ears. It also has a unique delivery system. In just 1 pump you can deliver 1ml of medication to your pets ears, so no more messy drops. And the best part is that it is only 1 pump, once a day, for 5 days. No more twice a day dosing for 2 weeks.

Easotic offers a combination of Hydrocortizone Aceponate combined with Miconazole and Gentamicin. In other words, it has a cortizone agent to cool down the ears and medications to help with yeast and bacteria. This is a nice combination and has worked relatively well so far.

Please note that this product may not be ideal for all infections, so ask your veterinarian if this product is right for you.

CASE OF THE MONTH
Ibuprofen...great for headaches, not so great for dogs.

Ibuprofen can be toxic to dogs and cats. A single 200mg ibuprofen tablet can be toxic to a cat or small to medium sized dog. Toxic effects can occur rapidly and damage the kidneys and stomach.

Once swallowed, ibuprofen is rapidly absorbed from the stomach to the intestines. Depending on the amount of drug ingested, toxic effects can occur within an hour. Some signs associated with toxicity can include: vomiting (sometimes with blood), diarrhea, appetite loss, dehydration, abdominal pain and pale gums.

If Ibuprofen ingestion is recognized right away, vomiting can be induced to remove the drug from the stomach before the body can absorb it. Your veterinarian may also administer a special preparation of liquid activated charcoal to slow the absorption of material from the stomach and intestines. Treatment may also include several days of fluid therapy, blood transfusions, medications to help heal stomach damage, and other medications to help support and stabilize the patient. Hospitalization may be required so that blood values, urine output and vital signs can be monitored. Ibuprofen toxicity can be fatal if the proper steps are not taken, however pets can survive if the condition is recognized, diagnosed and treated quickly. The amount of drug involved also has a direct effect on recovery and long-term outcome.

We have had a few cases recently of pets ingesting their owner's medications. No matter what medication it is, please make sure they are put away in a safe place out of the reach of your pets. Medications are processed differently in pets than they are in humans, so the doses they ingest may be toxic or even fatal!!!!!
