EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Ali, our newest receptionist, was born and raised in Utah. Her dream when she was little was to care for animals. Her career path started as a zoo keeper at Utah's Hogle Zoo. She was then an educator at Catalina Island and is now a reception at Martin Downs Animal Hospital. She is excited to see what comes next. Ali recently got SCUBA certified at Catalina Island, California and cannot wait to dive into Florida's warm waters. She has also worked at Walt Disney World and Sea World.

BOARDER OF THE MONTH
This is Levi. He is a year old mixed breed dog who is very shy. Levi came to us very scared of people. His owner brings him in for our Doggie Day Care program and since he has been coming here, he has calmed down and isn't as scared.

Levi is a handsome boy who needs lots of attention and socialization.  Our Doggie Day Care program in our Pet Resort is the perfect option to help him overcome his fears. The dogs coming for Doggie Day Care are exposed to numerous people throughout the day and get to interact with many other animals who are also in our Doggie Day Care program or are vacationing with us. We have several Doggie Day Care packages from which to choose so give us a call today if you are interested in day care your fur baby.

GROOM OF MONTH
Hogan and Conan are regular visitors of Martin Downs
Animal Hospital.  During their last visit, they were
signed up for several different services.
They started
their morning visiting with the doctors. Dr. Waters was
rechecking them from a previous visit and Dr. Jolin did
acupuncture on Conan to help with his arthritis. After
both dogs were finished on the medical side, they went
over to our Spa and received  Hydro-Surge baths

  followed by Furminator Packages.
The Furminator
Package helps get off all the dead hair and undercoat, and also helps to greatly decrease shedding.
To finish up their day, Hogan and Conan visited with all the other dogs in our Resort Doggie Day Care. We're sure they slept well that night when they returned home. As you can see, your pets can be taken care of by our doctors, receive a Spa treatment and also enjoy themselves in our day care program all in the same day.  So call us today to book your pet's special day!

DOMINO'S HOUSE - Ambrosia
Greetings, I have been named Ambrosia and I'm sure it's just because I'm so sweet. I'm 5 months old and a female Siamese/tortoiseshell mix. Nice mixture, isn't it? But seriously, I'm looking for a person or a family to love and adore for the rest of my life. I know the right person/family is out there. Could it be you? Come to Domino's House and let's meet and check each other out. You won't be sorry!

URBAN TAILS - Alto
This is the story of Alto :( These stories are so sad, you'd think they were made up... but they are not.
He was rescued by my friend Terrie when she was on her honeymoon in Costa Rica. Where she was staying, she saw a whole bunch of teenagers laughing and gathering the many small dogs that roam the streets there... as she watched with horror, it was clear they were not altruistic teens... she began to ask questions. Turns out the troubled  teens take the pups "down to the bridge" to feed them to the crocodiles for their sick entertainment. Turns your stomach? Mine too. So Terrie had seen this strikingly handsome white dog with Dalmatian spotted ears, who everyone was calling "Alto" (tall in Spanish). Alto could tell an angel when he saw one, and followed Terrie and her new husband everywhere. Terrie had heard that the boys had been trying to get Alto to the bridge, so Terrie and her husband moved Heaven and Earth to get Alto to his new life in America, so that he could live the true American Dream. Terrie is a rescuer like us, and has so many rescue animals (goats, pigs, etc.) that she knew the right place for Alto was with the youth of Urban Tails. The boys were scared of him at first (his scarred up nose and husky sounding talky talk), but realize now, that like their own stories, Alto is a survivor and a sweet love hound.

He is ready to be adopted!
Dalmatian/Husky mix (we think)
He weighs roughly 80 lbs
He is housebroken
He loves kids!
Get's along with other dogs
Gets along with cats and small critters
Walks good on a leash
He is neutered
He is up to date on his shots
He is sooooo sweet.

PROGRESSIVE THERAPEUTICS
Welactin is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids delivered from salmon and other cold water fish. Omega-3 fatty acids are "good health" fatty acids. Welactin contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which is formulated to deliver substantial levels of each to your pet. These fatty acids help support many systems in the body, including skin and coat health, organ function, joint health, brain and overall nervous system health, and the immune system. Many foods have EPA and DHA in them but if they are not given in the correct doses, they are not as effective.

This product is for dogs and cats. They come in either liquid or soft gel caps. These products are great and the doctors recommend them often.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
We would like to reintroduce Proheart 6 which is a great alternative to giving monthly oral heartworm prevention. This is a unique option in that it is an injection that lasts for a full 6 months. In addition to treating heartworms, Proheart 6 also treats existing larval and adult hookworms. Proheart 6 can be used in pets 6 months of age and older. This is a great alternative for owners who forget to give the monthly preventative, which is so important because of the way heartworms are transmitted. Mosquitoes transmit heartworms and Florida is the number 1 state for heartworm disease.

As a reminder...you must keep up on flea prevention!! Fleas are on the rampage this year and if you forget your preventions, you run the risk of your pets getting fleas.

XYLITOL TOXINS IN DOGS

Xylitol toxicity is on the rise! Are you aware of this harmful product? Xylitol is an artificial sweetener commonly found in sugarless gum and other candies and can wreak havoc on a dog's blood sugar levels resulting, in severe cases, liver failure.

Certain foods are well-known to dog owners to be toxic to their pets such as chocolate, raisins and grapes, but most don't realize that products containing xylitol may cause more harm. Xylitol is a natural substance derived from the bark of birch trees and is referred to as an artificial sweetener because it is a sugar alcohol. In people, xylitol generally has no effect on plasma insulin or glucose levels, making it a popular sweetener among diabetics. However, dogs metabolize xylitol differently. It triggers the release of insulin that causes a sudden drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and causes signs such as unsteadiness, depression, dilated pupils and, in severe cases, seizures. If it is ingested in large amounts, xylitol may lead to liver failure. Syptoms include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea.

Products that list xylitol as the first ingredient tend to be the most toxic to dogs. Some xylitol used in candies and mints is in a powder that is absorbed quickly in the system, causing signs of illness in 30 minutes. Gum is different. You have to chew it to release the xylitol, but dogs tend to swallow gum whole without chewing. It still leaches out into the stomach but it takes longer, sometimes up to 8-12 hours.

Treatment for xylitol toxicity is supportive treatment of fluids with dextrose to reduce the hypoglycemia and tracking of blood chemistries. The length of treatment depends on the severity of clinical signs. A typical case without liver involvement generally requires 1-3 days of treatment and should continue until glucose levels return to normal.

Today, xylitol is used in far more products than gum and candy. It is also in nasal spray, chewable vitamins, throat lozenges, sugar replacements for baking and the list goes on. Xylitol is even impregnated in fabric for a "cooling" effect.
