PFIZER VET COMES TO MDAH

On November 29th Dr. Michele Rosenbaum, who is a dermatologist with Pfizer, paid a visit to our hospital. She educated the doctors and three of our technicians on the different diseases and treatments that we come across in our general practice. Martin Downs Animal Hospital is a key account with Pfizer which entitles us to special perks to help enhance our practice.

She is excited to use acupuncture to help improve the quality of life for many of her patients.

Skyler has four pets of her own, two dogs and two cats. The most recent is the adoption of Cocoa, who was featured in a previous newsletter.
BOARDER OF THE MONTH
Dharma is a cute 2-year-old Golden Retriever mix. She stayed in our Resort over New Year's weekend.  She had a lot of fun interacting with her "fur"iends. She stayed comfortable in her large suite and got to play in one of the three play yards several times a day.

GROOM OF THE MONTH
Tigger is an 11-year-old Persian who needed a winter hair cut. He came in with very long fur which was matted and hard to manage. After our groomers were finished, he was  transformed with his new "Lion Cut". He also received a nice hydrosurge bath and nail trim.

PROGRESSIVE THERAPEUTICS
Canine Rehabilitation has several modalities.  Here are just a few brief and common topics.

Coordination Exercises
Coordination exercises help improve an animal's awareness of its surroundings. Exercises using cavaletti poles, pictured below, give an animal obstacles to walk over.  This exercise makes the animal focus on where each foot is being placed and builds coordination.

Balance Exercises

Balance exercises make use of equipment designed to strengthen weak muscles and build up limbs affected by atrophy. The wobble board, shown here, forces the animal to place its weight on the surgically repaired leg, building muscle in the affected area.

Exercise Ball

The exercise ball increases muscle strength in the core muscles of the abdomen and chest and the appropriate limbs. It can also help to assist fine motor control, smoothing out muscle movement.

Massage And Range Of Motion Exercises
Massage is used in animal physical therapy to relieve tension in muscles and stimulate muscle development. It also increases blood flow to the area and relieves muscle spasms. Range of motion exercises are accomplished through flexion and extension of the joint to its limits. These exercises are used to encourage full range of motion of the joints and decrease joint pain.

Cold Laser Therapy
Laser treatment is used for pain management, inflammation control and tissue healing. Cold lasers use focused red and infrared light to stimulate tissue at and below the surface of your pet's skin. It increases the production of cellular energy and thus promotes cellular regeneration, production of collagen for tissue repair, and vascular dialation and syntheses for better circulation.

Electrostimulation "E-Stim"
E-Stim stimulates nerves that cause the muscles to contract. This method is delivered to the patient via leads and flexible, low-resistance electrodes that conform to the skin. E-Stim can be used to help prevent muscle atrophy, increase local blood circulation and maintain or increase joint mobility.
