HELP THE NEEDY PETS AT URBAN TAILS

Urban Tails is a non-profit organization that allows incarcerated, at risk youths to save, train, love and adopt out homeless dogs to our community. These youths work hard each day taking care of the animals and now they are asking for your help.  There are two ways you can do this. In our hospital we have a Christmas Tree that has ornaments on it with dogs' names and some things they need, like an "Angel Tree" for children. If you are interested, please come by and take a name off the tree. The youths are also doing a fundraiser selling Holiday cards. Each pack is $20 and contains 10 cards and envelopes. 100% of the proceeds goes to Urban Tails.

PROGRESSIVE THEREPUTICSKnow Heartworms
Heartworms...small but deadly, especially to cats!

Heartworms are potentially lethal parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. Just 1 or 2 worms are enough to cause a potentially fatal illness.

It is a huge misconception that cats can't get heartworms. This is not just a dog disease. Heartworms in cats mostly affect the lungs, not just the heart. Signs are often mistaken for feline asthma, allergic bronchitis or other respiratory diseases. Heartworms can even cause sudden death in cats.

Another problem we face is that people think that indoor-only cats can't get heartworms. This is completely false. You may say, "my cat never goes outside." While this may be true, mosquitoes may travel into your home and bite your cat, depositing the deadly heartworm larvae. In a clinical study, >25% of cats diagnosed with heartworm disease were confirmed by their owners to be "indoor-only" cats.

Thankfully, we have something to help prevent this lethal parasite. Revolution is a monthly topical heartworm prevention that also prevents many other parasites. Please read the article in Preventative Medicine for more information.

Heartworm Life Cycle

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
How much do you know about keeping your cat protected from diseases caused by parasites? You might be surprised to learn that both indoor and outdoor cats are at risk. So what are these parasites? And how do they come in contact with your cat?

FLEAS: Fleas can be brought into your home by other animals. Once inside, they can multiply quickly, with female fleas able to lay up to 40-50 eggs per day. These eggs quickly turn into adult fleas and then infest your home, cat and other pets.

HEARTWORMS:
Heartworms are transmitted by feeding mosquitoes which caus
e Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease, a potentially serious feline lung disease. Indoor cats are at risk from mosquitoes that get into your home through open windows and doors. In a clinical study, >25% of cats diagnosed with heartworms were confirmed by their owners to be "indoor only" cats.

EAR MITES: Ear mites are highly contagious between cats and other pets and cause serious irritation in the ears. They can find their way indoors on infested pets that transmit mites when they come in contact with your cat.

R
OUNDWORMS: Roundworms can cause severe intestinal problems. Cats can become infected when they eat prey such as mice and other small animals containing larvae or when cats ingest infective eggs from the soil. Roundworms can also cause disease in people.

HOOKWORMS: Hookworms get into your cat's intestines where they feed on blood, causing vomiting, diarrhea and anemia. Cats can become infected by coming into contact with young hookworms deposited in soil from fecal matter or by eating rodents infected with their larvae.

There are a lot of parasites, indoors and outdoors, who'd like to infect your cat. That's why experts agree that year-round broad-spectrum parasite prevention is recommended for cats.

Revolution is a great product for cats that covers all of these parasites. If you are interested in trying Revolution, please let us know. We would gladly show you how to protect your pet by easily applying a one time free dose of this topical application.  If you purchase a six pack, you also get a free dose.
