HOSPITAL UPDATES / SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
PALM CITY FALL FEST
Martin Downs Animal Hospital will once again be participating in the Palm City Fall Fest. We will have a booth and be handing out goodie bags as well as our infamous bandanas and ties. The event will take place Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10am-5pm at Lance Corporal Justin Wilson Memorial Park. The Fall Fest will feature approximately 100 arts and crafts, community and business booths, specialties from local restaurants, a classic car show, musical entertainment and a children's area. Please stop by and say hi.
MUTT MARCH
Martin Downs Animal Hospital will be participating in another event this month. We will have a booth at the Mutt March to help the Treasure Coast Humane Society. This event will be held Saturday, October 29 from 8am to 12 noon at Halpatiokee Park in Stuart. You can bring your dog and walk to help the Humane Society raise funds. Registration will be at 8am and the walk begins at 9am. We hope to see you all there.
ANESTHESIA-FREE DENTAL DAY
This month Pet Dental Services will be here on October 13th to perform the anesthesia-free dentals. If you would like to know if you pet is a candidate, please call us and schedule an appointment. We still have a few openings for that date.
URBAN TAILS TOUR
Urban Tails is a program that allows at-risk, incarcerated youth in residential treatment facilities the ability to rehabilitate homeless shelter dogs and then place the dogs in permanent homes. In doing so, program participants learn empathy, personal awareness, responsibility, career development skills and positive community involvement through the care, training and rehabilitation of the dogs they rescue.
On September 9th, Dr. Waters opened the hospital up to four youths in the Urban Tails program to come and tour our facility. She discussed career options in the animal industry with them as well as educated them about our hospital. The four young men were very excited and interested to learn about different career options involving animals and were extremely educated on a number of topics about the veterinary industry. We enjoyed their company.

CHAMBER MEETING = DONATION TO A GOOD CAUSE
Dr. Poderski recently attended a special Chamber of Commerce luncheon on September 8th. He participated in their raffle and won the prize money which he donated back to the Tykes and Teens organization. Tykes and Teens is a non-profit agency that is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and their families through mental health and substance abuse counseling. They were very pleased with the donation from Dr. Poderski.

PROHEART INJECTION
Proheart, which we featured in last month's newsletter, is now available. As a reminder, Proheart is a 6-month heartworm injection. This is a convenient way to insure your pet is up to date on their heartworm prevention year round, and you don't even have to remember to give it monthly. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal to pets if left untreated. Currently there is no treatment available, so other alternatives are having to be used. This is just one more reason it is imperative your pet be on heartworm prevention year round.
