A NOTE FROM THE DOCTOR

Everyone is getting ready to celebrate our country's independence on Monday, July 4th.  It's an exciting time for families and friends with picnics, barbecues, boating and all around family fun.  However, don't forget your pets.  The holidays and summer months can be a very stressful time for your furry friends.  Loud noises, excessive heat, thunder storms and all around commotion can cause your dog or cat to run and hide!  Bark Busters has complied a Fourth of July Safety Tip list which will help your whole family weather the 4th of July.  These tips can be used on other occassions when your home gets very stressful.  Go to www.BarkBusters.com for a complete list.

HOSPITAL UPDATES/ANNOUNCEMENTS

DOMINO'S HOUSE FELINE FUN FEST
Drs. Karol and Robin Poderski along with their associate, Elizabeth Jolin, attended the 10th Anniversary of Domino's Cat Rescue League.  As local veterinarians, they were available for the public to ask questions and meet everyone. Some of Martin Downs Animal Hospital's staff members also helped at the event.  It was a great afternoon with plenty of fun and food for the whole family.  There was an old fashioned barbecue, bounce house for the kids, raffles and much more.  The public also had a chance to visit with all the residents of Domino's House and adopt a beautiful cat or kitten.  All proceeds went to Domino's Cat Rescue League which is a nonprofit organization.  Visit their website for more information. www.dominoshouse.org

TECHNICIAN DENTAL WEEKEND

Sherri, one of our veterinary technicians, recently attended a weekend seminar hosted by Dr. Brett Beckman, DVM who is a Certified Veterinary Dental Specialist.  The workshop was held in Orlando at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists.  All participants learned how to evaluate a pet's mouth for a dental procedure, dental charting of the mouth, x-ray techniques and pain management. They were also presented with case studies of common problems in dentistry.  It as a very interesting and informative conference with useful information to take back to their hospitals.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Bennett is our Employee of the Month.  At 19 years old, she is our youngest veterinary assistant.  Bennett has only been with Martin Downs Animal Hospital for a short time, but she has already gone from kennel and bathing to the medical side of the hospital.  From a young age, Bennett knew she wanted to work with animals.  She volunteered the whole summer at her vet's office while living in Boca Raton at the age of 12.  All of her friends were away at camp but not Bennett.  She is currently finishing her pre-rec courses at IRSC before starting on-line classes at St. Petersburg College in the Veterinary Technician program.  Bennett has many pets, including 500 cows she keeps on property in several counties with the help of her boyfriend.  So if you don't find Bennett at work at Martin Downs Animal Hospital, you will find her in the cow pens!

BOARDER OF THE MONTH
Tigger is our Boarder of the Month.  He is a 16 1/2 year old orange tiger cat.  He is very lovable and likes everyone to spend time with him while he relaxes in our Resort.  He is truly a cat with nine lives.  He had to have one of his legs removed in 2010, but that does not keep him down.  He still jumps and plays just like a kitten. Tigger likes to spend his free time looking out on the world from one of our cat condos which faces the front lobby.  He can watch all our other guests come and go without having to leave his room.  He is pictured here being loved by one of our Resort and Spa staff members.  Schedule a vacation for your pet with us this summer.  They will love it and so will you!

GROOM OF THE MONTH

Pookie is our Groom of the Month. He came to our Spa in search of a whole new look!  His coat had grown out very long and in the summer he wanted his hair easy to manage and brushed out.  After going from the Hydrosurge bath and hand drying, he was ready to get his new haircut.  Our professional groomer worked on his new "do" and finished with this whole new look.  What a difference a visit to our Spa can make!  Pookie looks relaxed and refreshed and ready for the 4th of July.  Make sure your pet is scheduled for their new look for the summer!

CASE OF THE MONTH

STEM CELL SURGERY

Hi Dr. Poderski!

I just wanted to give you a quick update on Tazzie's progress since his stem-cell surgery last week! Wow! What an amazing transformation one week can make. We have noticed a significant improvement in his ability to walk, run, and even jump. I know you told us to keep him a bit contained for the next few weeks, but this seems more difficult than we thought it would be as his energy level has sky-rocketed.

We are simply amazed by what we are seeing and in such a short amount of time after the surgery. Tazzie is like the way he used to be before he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I feel like we've given Tazzie a second lease on life through that stem-cell procedure, he's the happiest I've seen him in a few years. In typical German Shepherd nature, he's ready, willing and able to go again, just like the good old days!!! If he's experiencing any pain, I see absolutely no signs whatsoever.

Please know, from the bottom of my heart, that I sincerely appreciate you for telling us about this exciting new procedure and for performing it on my beloved dog Taz. If he could speak, he would say the same.....To your wonderful staff, I thank them just as much for caring about us as much as they care about the most wonderful dog I've ever been blessed with owning. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

By the way, if there are other patients of yours who are considering having stem-cell surgery my husband and I would be more than willing to speak with them. We simply cannot believe the results we're seeing in the first week. I will keep you updated every few weeks on his progress.

With Endless Thanks,

Jelene Dressler-Kane
