A NOTE FROM THE DOCTOR
Drs. Karol & Robin Poderski are happy to announce the Foster Military Pets Adoption event sponsored by Winn Dixie & Pedigree Dog Food was a great success. Dogs & Cats Forever and Domino's House brought dogs & cats available for adoption. Martin Downs Animal Hospital was on hand to help out and greet interested potential pet owners . There was a terrific turnout by the public and a total of six animals were adopted. Foster Military Pets also received a generous amount of donations to help their cause. We look forward to helping all these deserving agencies in the future. A big thanks to everyone involved!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Ashley is our employee of the month. She is currently enrolled at Indian River State College to achieve her goal of becoming an equine veterinarian. She has lived in Florida her whole life, and she has been working with horses, dogs and cats ever since she was little. Ashley came to Martin Downs Animal Hospital to get experience working in a veterinarian hospital. She owns a beautiful horse named Bailey and competes in Barrel Racing competitions with him. Her first horse was named Sandy (she's the horse in the picture) and Ashley competed in hunter/jumpers. She loves working with all animals big and small.

BOARDER OF THE MONTH
Mei Li and Gipper are our choices for Boarders of the Month. Mei Li is a creme colored 4 month old Shar Pei and Gipper is a 3 1/2 month old Golden Retriever. Both puppies have joined our Doggie Day Care camp. They enjoy spending the day at our Resort, playing together and with all the other campers. In the morning, all campers go outside according to their age and size to play in the pool and on the playground. Midday you will find our guests having a snack and enjoying the comfortable beds inside the Resort. Later in the day, the campers romp and play inside together with our camp counselors. These puppies are having a great time this summer! Call today and have your puppy join our Doggie Day Care camp. We know they'll have a great time!

GROOMING CORNER
Nola Saxon is the groomer's choice for the month of June. She is a cute little sable and white Pomeranian puppy who experienced her first visit to our Spa. Nola started her day with a hydrosurge bath using our Hypo "Aloe" Genic special shampoo to gently cleanse and moisturize her fur. Next, her coat was dried and brushed out before the actual haircut. She then received her new "do", a cute puppy cut from our professional groomer. As you can see, Nola really enjoyed her day at Martin Downs Animal Hospital's Spa. If you have a puppy in need of grooming, drop by and meet our groomers. Start your puppy at an early age with grooming so they are used to having a bath and haircut. It saves them a lot of stress later in life.

CASE OF THE MONTH
In recognition of Drs. Karol & Robin's Purina trip to Kansas City, we thought we would create a case to follow over the next few months as a Weight Management case.Purina has launched a weight loss program called "Project Pet Slim Down". They just finished a 14 year research study that followed 48 dogs from 7 litters from birth through adulthood. The summary of the study showed that leaner fed dogs live nearly two years longer than those that did not have caloric control. Obesity has now become the #1 health problem of our pets as 50% of cats and dogs seen at veterinary hospitals are overweight. The benefits of being leaner are similar to those in people. Leaner dogs and cats have better blood sugar levels, less osteoarthritis, fewer signs of aging (such as graying) and are more active. Purina created and patented a body scoring system to help describe what the true body condition is of a pet. The score goes from 1 to 9 with 5 being ideal. Their research has shown it is better to loose weight with a higher protein content vs. a higher fiber content as was previously believed. "Princess", a Wheaton Terrier owned by Heidi, one of our receptionists, is our featured weight loss candidate for our Project Slim Down. Princess's body score, according to the system developed by Purina, is a 9/9. We will follow her monthly to give you updates on her progress. Due to Princess's skin problems, she will be eating HA, a prescriptive hypoallergenic Purina diet. We anticipate it will take 6 or more months for Princess to reach her ideal body score. Everyone in Princess's family has to commit to stop giving her treats! Please stayed tuned for her progress checks. "Before" pictures are included.
