A NOTE FROM THE DOCTOR

Martin Downs Animal Hospital is very much involved with Foster Military Pets.  The mission of this program is to provide safe and secure temporary foster homes for the pets of deploying military personnel until they return home.  It is a small token of Dr. P's appreciation for the military protecting our country.  Dr. P's Polish upbringing makes him particularly cognizant of this.  Recently, Dr. P and his daughter, Karolina visited West Point Military Academy.  Karolina is a high school student being recruited by the academy.  Both of them were very impressed with the school.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE

It is estimated that 16 in every 1,000 cats suffer from feline kidney disease.  It can occur in cats of all ages, but is usually a disease of older pets.  Since chronic kidney disease is usually a progressive disorder, involving the loss of adequate function over a period of months to years, chronic kidney disease in cats cannot be cured.  However, medical treatment and dietary management can help reduce or eliminate symptoms and make your cat more comfortable.  Dietary therapy is typically the mainstay of the management of kidney failure.  A therapeutic food helps reduce the signs of kidney failure and slow the progression of the disease to help your pet feel better.  There are several types of kidney diets for cats.  Two recommendations by the veterinarians here at Martin Downs Animal Hospital are Renal LP Modified by Royal Canin and also NF Kidney Function Formula by Purina.

CASE OF THE MONTH

When Sweetheart was diagnosed with a stone in her ureter by Dr. Jolin, the treatment approach was to try to manage it without the need for surgical intervention.  This was not the case.  Sweetheart was in pain and the stone had gotten stuck just before the entrance to her bladder.  Now she needed surgery.  Dr. P performed the surgical examination of the abdomen and found out that Sweetheart's ureteral stone was only one of her problems.  The stone had caused a severe enlargement of her ureter and a severe infection of her kidney.  Both had to be removed to save Sweetheart's life.  After the removal of  the abscessed kidney, Sweetheart was hospitalized for a few days and released with a good prognosis.  Good luck, Sweetheart!  We know you have 9 lives but only 1 kidney.  Take it easy. Dr. P
