IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The Winkel Family
The Heritage Village is the perfect place for SuGaBuG Kids. SuGaBuG is after all part of the Winkel family heritage. We'll get to that in a minute....
Henning, the owner of SuGaBuG Kids is a first generation American. His father was raised in Denmark and immigrated to the United States back in the 40's. Henning Sr. was a Merchant Marine and owned a business in Brooklyn, NY. He drove over 3 hours a day to work so his family could live on Long Island and his 8 children could attend better schools. Henning joined the Marines before the draft and was stationed in NC. As a veteran he left the snow behind and attended junior college in Key West before transferring to UF. Henning started working construction and started Winkel Construction in the early 80's. Henning loves the south, nature and found that Levy County is where he wanted to build his home and raise his children. He was a single parent and raised 2 daughters: Randi, a missionary living in Jacksonville and Kelly, currently living on Long Island within miles of her dad's boyhood home and working in Manhattan.
April, Henning's wife was born in Miami but raised in Levy County after her parents fell in love with Manatee Springs on an anniversary canoe trip. Her dad, Perry, is a DOT engineer and her mom is the "Florida Gourd Lady." Growing us as a youth minister's kid was fun for April and her sister. "We always had lots of people around; friends, family, church members, someone in need, always going and doing." Granny and Poppa lived in Bronson and were a major influence on April. Her mom taught her how to sew, but Granny taught her the love of sewing, crafting, and southern cooking, aka (the art of being a southern woman). April was very involved in the community through 4-H, church, school band, etc., but always felt a call to Europe. Her mom helped her realize this goal by fundraising to help send April to Germany for a year as an exchange student. "This year changed my life forever. It was the best experience." After returning April went skipped her senior year and went to CFCC. Eventually she graduated from there several times with degrees and certificates in English, Cosmetology and Barbering. She also has a Business degree from Saint Leo University. April isn't new to the retail world. She supervised 10 hair salons and as Henning will confirm, she loves to shop for a good bargain!
Henning and April met through her parents and their mutual love of motorcycles, antique cars and dancing. They had a whirlwind romance and were married in a fairytale Christmas wedding in 2005. Alexis is the miracle baby God blessed them with in 2008 after years of being told that April would not conceive. She truly is a blessing to her family and those around her. Of course it helps that she is a mini Shirley Temple!
The Winkels came to the Heritage Village for Market Day with Art last October. April's mom was supposed to have a gourd booth and couldn't make it so they came down with April's handmade dresses, bows, and flower bling beanies. Citrus County loved them! Laura Lou made quite an impression on them and with a few weeks remodeling had begun on Ada B's cottage and SuGaBuG Kids was born! They opened the following Market Day. Most visitors to the store assume that Alexis is the "Sugabug" but actually it is engraved in Henning's wedding ring. "We couldn't think of a more fitting name."
Now as their first anniversary is coming up; if you visit you will notice some big changes to the Kids' Korner as they like to call it. They are pleased to announce that they have expanded into the Barco cottage and now offer Tuesday Playdates at 10:30 with an Around the World theme, Kindermusik with Angie on Thursdays, Guitar and Piano lessons on Wednesdays and Fridays, custom birthday parties and baby showers as well. There will also be etiquette, arts, crafts, gourds, and scrapbooking classes for kids and adults to come. April always says, "Education is freedom." She had to start including some of that in the store too. If you haven't stopped by yet, you are truly missing a hidden gem. SuGaBuG Kids is more than just kids' stuff. Although they have a unique mix of custom clothing, squeaky shoes, international toys and rare gifts. They even have some great MOM gear.
Henning and April want to express a huge "thank you" to Erin Garbig for all of her hard work. Designing, sewing, and helping in the store, we couldn't have done it without you!

Turns 85!
On Saturday, September 18th, 2010, my mom turned 85 years old. Mom is aging beautifully and is as spry as she was at 50. We planned a tailgating theme birthday party at Huey and Kathy's house to watch her favorite team, The Florida Gators, play football. Mom went out and bought matching Gator shirts, for she and dad to wear for this festive occasion. The family brought tailgating-themed foods and birthday cake to celebrate! I can only hope I am half the amazing woman she is as I grow older!
